- Fletcher "Gene" Simerly, 85, of Greeneville, Tenn., passed away Thursday, September 21, 2017, at Laughlin Memorial Hospital, Greeneville. A native of Elizabethton, Tenn., he was the son of the late Ernie and Dolly Casey Simerly. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee with his degree in Electrical Engineering. "Gene" retired as an electrical engineer at Phillips Electronics. He worked for the U.S. Government on the ICBM Submarine Missile Program and was the primary developer of the Nintendo game. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. "Gene" enjoyed watching Tennessee Vols football and loved the outdoors, hiking and going to the beach.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Simerly, and two sisters, Ada McKinney and Edith Peters.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Nancy Simerly, of the home, and a nephew, Earl McKinney, Elizabethton. Several cousins also survive.
A graveside service to honor the life of Fletcher "Gene" Simerly will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 27, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be special friends, Patsy and Junior. Military Honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.
