- Mary Evelyn Sargent, age 94, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 1, 2021, from Signature Health Center and Rehab of Elizabethton. Mary was born in Carter County to the late Arthur Mack Wilson and Lottie Margaret Lewis. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband Richard Lee (R.L.) Sargent; a daughter, Barbara Lee Wilson; two brothers, Millard Wilson and Lester Wilson; and three sons-in-law, Gary Burrow, Carl D. Hardin and Wilbur C. Banks.
Mary retired from Raytheon Corporation, where she had worked as an inspector. She was a wonderful mother and caregiver and will be very missed by her family and friends. Mary was a member of New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Golden Group. Mary loved to read, she loved children, gardening, hummingbirds, flowers- especially red flowers. She also enjoyed riding motorcycles, ATVs, going to the beach, camping, helping people and fighting for the “underdog” and those who could not fend for themselves.
Those left to cherish her many wonderful memories include two daughters, Shirley Ann Banks, of Unicoi, TN and Robert Jean Campbell and her husband Ed, of Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Mary Ann Hughes and husband Chris, of Unicoi, TN and Nicholas Hardin, of Elizabethton; four great-grandchildren, Courtney Vance, Kelsey Hughes, Jaelyn Hardin and Tennyson Hardin; three great-great-grandchildren, Tristan Marotto, Piper Anna Lee Vance and Addison Vance; a goddaughter, Rosalee Oaks and family; two godsons, Larry and Brenda Peters and their family and Jimmy and Barbara Peters and their family; a sister-in-law, Gertrude Rose Vaughn; and a son-in-law, Larry E. Wilson. Several nieces and nephews also survive, as well as a special friends, Natalie Stout and Norman Garland.
A service to celebrate the life of Mary Evelyn Sargent will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2021, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Reverend Nick Colbaugh officiating. Music will be under the direction of the New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church Quartet, Reverend Kevin Laws and Joe Sargent. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Saturday.
The committal and entombment will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 6, 2021, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Reverend Kevin Laws officiating. Active pallbearers will be Jimmy Buckles, Jaelyn Hardin, Nicholas Hardin, Aaron Greer, Wes Greer, Andy Hardin, Billy Grindstaff and Chris Hughes. Honorary pallbearers will be Ed Campbell, Bill Lingerfelt, Reverend Charlie Trivette, Jimmy Peters, Larry Peters and Tynneson Hardin.
