- Newell was the son of Jeremiah Julius
and Mary (Hauser) Glenn. He was
educated at the Univ. of Pennsylvania
Medical School. He became a medical
doctor and served in this capacity
during the Civil War. He became
quite prosperous and was able to
provide a college education for several
of his children.
He married Mary Ann Nading 22 Sept. 1863
in East Bend, Surry Co., N.C. Mary Ann's
brother, Sanford Nading ran the Ferry
that crossed the Yadkin River near Old
Salem, N.C. It was known as "Nadings
Ferry".
Newell and Mary were the parents of
six children: Dora Louise; Chalmus C.;
Laura J.; Mary Rosa; Claudia; Wm. D.;
and Alonzo P.
Mary was born 5 April 1837 in Stokes Co.,
N.C. and died 21 Feb 1915 in Metz,
Vernon Co., Missouri. She was the dau.
of Christian and Nancy Anna (Ledford)
Nading.
Newell died in East Bend, Surry Co., N.C.
His wife, Mary died in Vernon Co., Mo.
at the home of their son, Alonzo. She
is buried in Neva, Johnson Co., Tennessee
and believe the name of the cemetery is
Pine Grove Cemetery located in Neva.
Other family members are buried in Pine
Grove Cemetery also.
