- The Rev. E.E. Hazelwood, 61, well known Baptist minister, died at his home at Hampton last night following an illness of several weeks. The deceased was one of the most highly respected and beloved ministers in this entire section and has the distinction of preaching in almost every church of the Watauga Baptist association which comprises Johnson and Carter counties. At the time of his death, He was pastor of the Union Baptist church of Cardens Bluff, having accepted the pastorate on May 11, 1913. Ordained a minister in 1906 at Hampton by the Rev. W.J. Potter, assisted by the Rev. John Rainbolt and the Rev. Sam C. Deloach, he has served as pastor at Milligan, Limestone Cove, Little Mountain, Hunter, Winner, Carter, Stoney Creek, Harmony Baptist Church, Poplar Grove, Caldwell Baptist Church, Siam, Gap Creek, Fish Springs, Dungan's Chapel and at Hampton. In his ministerial work, he has held numerous revivals and baptized more than 2,000 converts. Following out the command of the Master, he has loved his fellowmen as himself and led a life of service, going throughout the mountainous section, helping those not only in spiritual need, but physically as well. Dark, stormy weather meant nothing to him as many times at night he has traveled miles through rain and cold to help those in need. He served as preacher and teacher to many. The Rev. Hazelwood was born on September 7, 1873. On Feb. 11, 1894, he was married to Miss Celia M. Goodwin, four children being born to this union, two daughters and two sons. His Christian life began very early, having professed faith in Christ in 1888 uniting with the Hampton Baptist church one year later. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. E.E. Hazelwood; one daughter, Mrs. John Miller; four grandchildren, Dovie Pearl Miller, Edgar Miller, Mary Christine Hazelwood, Charles Hazelwood; one brother, George Hazelwood, all of Hampton. Funeral services will be conducted from the Union Baptist church at Carden's Bluff Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Bowden, the Rev. Clay Wilson and Judge W.R. Allen officiating. Interment will be made in the Morton cemetery. Active pall bearers will be Henry Guinn, Donce Street, James B. Deal, Percy Campbell, Bob Campbell, Bruce Pierce, Roy Wilson and Will Sams. Honorary pall bearers will include Sam Carden, M.C. Montgomery, Charlie Blevins, W.A. Sorrell, D.O. Johnson, Oscar Johnson, Nat Carden, Loss Morton, Charlie Peters, D.D. Campbell, Will Horton, Dr. Joe Hardin, Connor Lunsford, Sheriff J.M. Moreland, W.C. O'Brien, Dave Ritchie, Sam Montgomery, Major C.R. Hathaway, E.E. Hathaway, Ben Peters, Lonnie Carden, Bruce Smith, Dr. J.B. Shoun, Lige Peters, John Smith, Lonnie White, Huse Nidiffer.
