Failed to Explode
Lyons said a charge of dynamite had been set in a hole and the fuse lighted. It failed to explode and after waiting 11 minutes, the four men returned to the site to see what was wrong.
"We put another charge in to make the first one go off," Lyons said.
The second charge exploded but the first one still failed to detonate. The men again returned to the site and one began probing in the loose dirt.
Then the orginal charge exploded.
Peeks and Oliver were reported in fair condition at Kingsport's Holston Valley Community Hospital.
