- JOHNSON CITY - Mrs. Jean Burleson Matherly, 87, Johnson City, passed away December 27, 2017 at Johnson City Medical Center.
Born in Johnson City, she was the daughter of the late Mallie Cole Burleson and Arley Robert Burleson. She lived her entire life in Johnson City.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herb H. Matherly; her son, Herbert Matherly Junior; and three brothers, Bill, Bob, and Zane Burleson.
Jean's survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Matherly, Kingsport; Laura Matherly, United Arab Emirates ; two granddaughters, Emily Matherly, Boulder, Colorado; and Angela Matherly, Colorado Springs, Colorado; brother, Charles Burleson, Atlanta; and sister, Patsy Waters, Limestone. A host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends also survive Ms. Jean.
She attended Fall Street Baptist Church as a child and was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
She received her Bachelors and Masters degrees from East Tennessee State University. She was a retired teacher from the Johnson City School System where she taught fifth and sixth grades at North Side and Henry Johnson Elementary Schools.
Jean was a homemaker who enjoyed bridge, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, quilting, and time with family and friends.

A private disposition will be held at the Matherly Cemetary in Butler, Tennessee, at a later date.
