- Viola J. Roark, age 87, 667 Hampton Creek Road, Roan Mountain, died Monday, September 15, 2003 at Charles A. Cannon Memorial Hospital, Linville, NC following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late John and Daisy Birchfield Johnson. She was a member of Grays Chapel Presbyterian Church. She was a homemaker and a member of Order of Eastern Star Hampton Chapter #470.
Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Walter D. Roark, of the home, two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Mary and Bernard Brengard, Asheville, NC, Mrs. Margaret and George Hegler, Lancaster, SC, three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Gail Roark, Lincolnton, NC, Johnie and Burma Roark, Claremont, NC, Lonnie and Judy Roark, Mooresville, NC, two sisters, Ora Toney, Richmond, VA, Creola Gentry, Richmond, VA, one brother, Paul Johnson, Roan Mountain, seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, one great grandchild, several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at Tetrick Funeral Home Rhododendron Chapel, Roan Mountain with Mr. Thom Burleson officiating. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 18, at Johnson Roan View Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Joey McKinney, Frank Presnell, Roger Palmer, Donnie Holdren, friends and neighbors. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:55 a.m. Thursday.
