- Walter D. Roark, 98, of Roan Mountain, passed away on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville, NC following a brief illness. He was the son of the late Lon Boston and Floy Rash Roark and was born in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Viola Johnson Roark, and three sisters, Ethel Heaton, Emma Shell and Bertha Roark.
Mr. Roark was retired from Bemberg Corporation. He was a member of the Gray's Presbyterian Church. Mr. Roark was an active member of Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge #566 F and AM where he served as past Master and Treasurer for many years. He and his wife were members of the Eastern Star for over fifty years.
He is survived by two daughters, Mary Brengard and her husband, Bernard, Asheville, NC; Margaret Hegler and her husband, George, Lancaster, SC; three sons, David Roark, Roan Mountain; Johnie Roark and his wife, Burma, Claremont, NC; Lonnie Roark and his wife, Judy, Mooresville, NC; seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a brother, Ed Roark, Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Roark will be conducted on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 7:00 PM in the Rhododendron Chapel ~ Tetrick Funeral Home ~ Roan Mountain with Rev. John McCoury officiating. A Masonic service will follow. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6:00-7:00 PM Thursday and at the home of his son, David, at other times.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Friday, July 15, 2011 at 11:00 AM in the Johnson Roanview Cemetery with Mr. Gerald Holly, minister, officiating. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:50 AM Friday.
