- William Edward Roark, 91, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2016, at Roan Highlands Nursing Center. William was the son of the late Lon and Floy Roark, also of Roan Mountain. Born in 1925 in Carter County, he moved to Hampton Creek in Roan Mountain at the age of four, where he lived the remainder of his life.
Ed worked 33 years at Bemberg Corporation of Elizabethton and the last nine years at Snap-on Tools, where he retired. He was well liked and respected by co-workers who gave him the name, "Big Ed."
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Nell Roark; a brother, Walter Roark of Roan Mountain; and three sisters, Emma Shell, Bertha Roark and Ethel Heaton.
Ed was a Christian and attended St. John Free Will Baptist Church of Roan Mountain.
Survivors include his three children, Eddie Roark and wife Pat of Roan Mountain, Gerald Roark and wife Helen of Hampton, and Bennie Buchanan of Roan Mountain; nine grandchildren also survive, Shannon Hill, Eric Roark, Bradley Roark, Steve Buchanan, LeAnn Townsend, Scotty Roark, Terry Lynn Cairnes and Carry Beth Roark and a special granddaughter, Sunni Buchanan; and also great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:30 p.m. Saturday, October 8, at Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain. The graveside service will follow in the Gibbs Cemetery in Roan Mountain with Rev. Tull Oaks officiating. Music will be provided by Charlotte Smith. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Roan Highlands Nursing Center for the care and kindness shown to Ed while he was there.
