- The spirit of Billy O. Proffitt, age 77, left this world on Thursday, June 9th, 2016. Due to complications from Alzheimer's he slipped away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family.
He is a native of Watauga County, NC. As a youth he worked alongside his father in the timber business acquiring his lifelong work ethic. After graduating high school from Beaver Creek High School he completed a Bachelor's Degree at Appalachian State Teacher's College in Boone, NC. He then moved to Southern Maryland where he taught high school in Prince George and Calvert Counties in Maryland. He also worked for the Calvert County ASCS office for several years.
In 1970 he moved to Johnson City, TN, where he began a career in Real Estate and Development. He served as chairman of the Washington County Zoning Appeals Board for many years. He received much pleasure from farming, ETSU basketball, and traveling "out west". He was a long time member of Marvin's Chapel United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents Arlie and Gertrude Proffitt.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Rosalea Farley Proffitt; sons, Patrick and Billy and grandson Josh of Jonesborough; sister, Dian Ray and husband, Jerry of Winston Salem, NC; niece. Candace Ray and nephew, John Ray also of Winston Salem, NC. He was very special to his wife's family in the Maryland area.
Receiving of friends and family will be on Monday, June 13, 2016 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Marvin's Chapel United Methodist Church. The Celebration of Life Ceremony, officiated by Pastor Ricky Clowers, will begin at 8 pm. The church is located on 1882 Old Boones Creek Road, Johnson City, TN.
