- JOHNSON CITY - Mary Loyd Stribling, 92, Johnson City, entered into rest on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at her residence surrounded by family.
Mrs. Stribling was born in Mountain City, TN November 24, 1923 to the late Walter and Ethel Forrester Loyd. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years Dr. Herman A. Stribling, Jr. and her brother Mr. James F. Loyd.
Mrs. Stribling devoted her life to the service of others whether it was in the classroom or in her community. She will be best remembered as a most caring and beloved schoolteacher. She received her B.S. in Education from ETSU in 1945. While she taught at several schools throughout her 33-year career, she is most often associated with her time at Towne Acres Elementary. It was during her time there she was awarded Teacher of the Year for K-4 in 1986 for her school and district. As one parent of a student recalled, Mrs. Stribling was the "type of teacher who touches your heart, makes you want to learn, want to get up eagerly and go to school, want to do good, and make you do things you never thought you could do."
Mrs. Stribling was a member of the National Education Association, Tennessee Education Association, Johnson City Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma (past president), Phi Delta Kappa, and Business & Professional Women's Club (past president). She served on the Superintendent's Advisory Council, Southern Association Accreditation Committee, and Methodist Church Board. She received many accolades during her lifetime including, Outstanding Educator of the South, Honorary Life Member PTA, Silver Poet Award (World of Poetry) '86, Outstanding Leaders in Elementary & Secondary Education '76.
Mrs. Stribling was of the Christian faith and attended Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her daughter Dr. Vickie Grist and husband Dr. Dana Grist of Johnson City, TN; her son Dr. Buddy Stribling and wife Mrs. Debbie Stribling of Kingsport, TN; Four grandchildren Mrs. Jennifer Hite and husband Mr. Daniel Hite of Jonesborough, TN, Dr. Kathryn Grist of Johnson City, TN, Ms. Madison Stribling and Mr. Alex Stribling of Kingsport, TN; Great-Grandson Finnegan Hite of Jonesborough, TN; Sister-In-Law Mrs. Mildred Loyd, Houston, TX; Two nephews Mr. Leonard Loyd and wife Mrs. Karen Loyd of Cypress, TX, and Mr. Paul Loyd and wife Mrs. Barbara Loyd of Fredericksburg, TX.
The family would like to express their deepest thanks and gratitude to her primary caregiver, Mrs. Helen Burrough, for her tremendous love and care she demonstrated over the years attending to Mrs. Stribling. Special thanks to friends Mrs. Sandra Keebler and Mrs. Becky Hale for their friendship and care. Also thanks to Dr. Paul Brown, Jr, Melissa Leake, and staff of Johnson City Internal Medicine as well as Dr. Chad Drey of State of Franklin OBGYN Associates for their compassionate care. Sincere thanks to Mountain States Hospice for their kindness.
The family will receive friends at Tetrick Funeral and Cremation Services of Johnson City on Friday August 26, 2016 from 6:00pm-8:00pm as well as at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church on Saturday August 27, 2016 beginning at 12:30pm. A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Stribling will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday August 27, 2016 at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church with Reverends Mark Gooden and Michael Lester officiating. Private inurnment will be at Monte Vista Memorial Park.
The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations in memory of Mrs. Stribling may be made to either Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church's Pastor's Discretionary Fund or Children's Department.
