- In loving memory of SFC, United States Army (Retired) Cratus (Smokey) Barnett, a Vietnam Veteran of three tours. Retired Army of 23 years and a two time Purple Heart Recipient. Beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who passed away on Saturday, June 25th, 2016 at the age of 77. Cratus was born in Mitchell County, North Carolina on December 19, 1938. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Reverend Calvin and Rittie Barnett of Green Mountain, North Carolina and a daughter, Shari (Lynch) Barnett of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Kathleen Barnett; twelve siblings, Arnold, Maxine, Edna, Gaylon, Carrie, Carolyn, Charlotte, David, Danny, Michael, Jackie and Jerry. Cratus had eight children, Sonya, Steve, Manuela, David, Daryl, Danny, Todd and Darin; fourteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
Smokey was an avid musician and fan of blue grass music. He played at the Red Barn and other venues. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, working in his yard and was a member of the American Legion. He was a master carpenter and loved his dog and best friend, Zeke.
The family will hold a memorial service for Cratus (Smokey) Barnett at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, June 29th, 2016 at the Marbelton Freewill Baptist Church, 1703 Marbleton Road, Unicoi, TN where he will receive full military honors accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Anyone who wants to is welcome to speak at this service.
