- Thomas Jackson "Jack" Greer, 78, passed away on March 20, 2016.
Thomas Jackson Greer was born on October 9, 1937 to Fred and Annis Greer as the youngest of nine brothers and sisters. He graduated from Johnson County High School in 1955. After high school he attended college for a short while at Lees McRae College and then Milligan College, but after his father had a stroke, he left school to help care for his parents. Following a short but memorable career as a truck driver, hauling green beans and other types of produce, Jack began employment at Mountain Electric Cooperative in Mountain City in 1959. His career there spanned over 35 years starting on the line crew and retiring as Superintendent of Operations in 1993. The remainder of his life was spent raising cattle along with his brother-in-law Walter Simcox.
Jack was a life-long member of First Christian Church where he served as deacon, elder, and chairman of the church board. For several years Jack and Virginia worked together as Church Treasurer. He was currently serving as Trustee and participated in almost all the activities that go on at church and especially enjoyed Ken Caswells Young at Heart Ministry.
Jack and Virginia Clara Simcox were married in 1960 at First Christian Church in Mountain City, Tennessee with H. T. Mabry performing the ceremony. On November 22, 2015, they celebrated their 55th anniversary.
Their oldest son William Burl "Bill" (wife Edwina) is president of Milligan College, Donald Jackson (wife Annette) is a project manager for Maymead, Inc., and James Walter "Jim" (wife Sherri) is Director of Operations for Appalachian Electric Cooperative in New Market, Tennessee.
Jack and Virginia are the proud grandparents of seven grandchildren. They have six grandsons: Logan, Jeremy (married to Allie Blevins from Atlanta, GA), Jake, Shane, Stacy, Zane, and one granddaughter, Sarah. They also have one great-granddaughter, Presley, the daughter of Jeremy and Allie.
In addition to his immediate family Jack is survived by one brother, Sam Greer and wife Sally of Johnson City, TN, and two sisters, Ida Ingram and husband Jack, of Canton, GA, and Bobbie Grindstaff, of Okeechobee, FL, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Annis Greer, his brother Joe Greer, and sisters Virginia Garland, Helen Moore, Earlene Varn and Gladys Hicks.
The family will receive friends from 5-7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at the First Christian Church with the funeral service to follow at 7:30 p.m. with Minister Dwayne Dickson officiating. Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 24, 2016 at the Dunn Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons.
