- TELFORD - Mr. Gene Leonard Cordell, 75, of Telford, passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. He was the son of the late Darris Emory and Lilly Fasada Harmon Cordell and was born in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, James Cordell, Oliver Cordell, Granville Nathaniel Cordell, Wayne Cordell, Loren Cordell, Daryell Cordell, Glen Cordell and two sisters, Edith Davis and Flisty Ann Cordell.
Mr. Cordell was a 1958 graduate of Cranberry High School in Newland, NC and a 1985 graduate of I.T.T. in Hammond, IN where he obtained a degree as an Integrated Lab Technician. He was retired from L.T.V. Steel Corporation in Indiana where he worked for thirty-one years as a crane operator. Mr. Cordell was a member of Hampton Christian Church. He had also served as an elder and Sunday School teacher at Cline Gardens Christian Church. He loved to fish and loved sports, especially football.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Bonnie Cordell of the home; a son, Stacey Richard Cordell and his wife, Stacy, Greenville, SC; a daughter, Deborah Jean Cordell-Rambaud and her husband, George, Limestone, TN; three grandchildren, Spencer Claus, Hayden Rambaud and Dezsel Rambaud; a brother, Zane Cordell and his wife, Jo Ann, OH; a sister, Janice Stafford, Hampton; Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor the life of Mr. Cordell will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Mr. Duane Calhoun, minister and Mr. James Elbert Smith, minister, officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Tuesday prior to the service and at the home at other times.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Stacey Richard Cordell, George John Rambaud, Hayden Gene Rambaud, Paul Emery Stafford, Spencer Leigh Claus and Gregory Sharp Springer. Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Lane and Ron Jones. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet the family at the funeral home at 10:15 AM on Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
