- On May 16, 2016, Betty Jean Waycaster Payne, 85, of Hampton, left this world to gather in another. There she will meet her husband of 45 years, Jack H. Payne; her beloved granddaughter, Kathie Jean Wilson and her Jesus; her parents, Bence and Jane Waycaster; seven sisters, Gertrude, Ella, Virgie, Mattie, Mamie, Irene and Florence; and two brothers, Daniel and Theodore Waycaster.
Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Sandra Montgomery and husband Carl, and her youngest, Jackie Honeycutt; two grandchildren, Kristy Phillips and Jason Phillips; two great-grandsons, C.J. Wilson and Samuel Phillips; and one sister, Juanita Timberlake, of Maryland. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Mrs. Payne was retired from Hampton Elementary School as a cook. Her great-grandson, Samuel, named her "Betty the Great," and she truly was!
A graveside service to honor the life of Mrs. Betty Jean Waycaster Payne will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 19, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Ronnie Campbell officiating. Active pallbearers will be Todd Montgomery, Carl Montgomery, Cheyenne LaMarche, Jason Phillips, Stan Wilson and Joe Greenwell. Honorary pallbearers will be Thomas Deloach, Bill Lancaster, Bobby Smith, Bud Smith, Glen Ray Simerly and Jimmy Smith
