- Roger Odell Oakes, 66, of Roan Mountain, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2016, at Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Jack and Cleo Potter Oakes.
Roger was a graduate of Cloudland High School. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era, where he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars and the Infantryman Badge: Expert (Rifle). He attended Roan Mountain United Methodist Church. He loved to hunt fish and go camping.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Roger Lynn Oakes, and a sister, Brenda Banks.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Barbara Hall Oakes; his children, Adam Oakes and Braydin Oakes, both of Roan Mountain, and Devin Oakes, Fort Polk, La.; a granddaughter, Aaliyah Oakes; his sisters, Orah Lee Andrews, Butler, Sandra Henson and Jackie Thomas, both of Roan Mountain; five brothers, Kenneth Oakes, Lenoir, N.C., Larry Oakes, Banner Elk, N.C., Tommy, Terry and Rhudy Oakes, all of Roan Mountain; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Roger Odell Oakes were conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 19, at High Point Baptist Church, Roan Mountain, with the Rev. Dennis Millhorn officiating. Graveside services and interment were at 11 a.m. Monday, June 20, in the Brewer-Oakes Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers were Adam Oakes, Mike Ward, Tommy Oakes, Little Larry Oakes, Jerry Potter, Randy Brinkley, Scott Oakes, Josh Oakes and Jerry Jones. Honorary pallbearers were his many friends at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at High Point Baptist Church. Military Honors were provided by the Carter County Honor Guard.
