- Mrs. Lona Peters, 68, of Rt. 2, Hampton, died unexpectedly in the Carter County Memorial Hospital at 11 am Tuesday. Mrs. Peters was a native of Carter County, and a daughter of the late J.L. and Mollie Johnson Morton, and was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Peters in 1924. She was a former employee of the Reeling Department of Beaunit Corp., and was a member of the Union Baptist Church. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Wilson, Canton, Ohio, and Mrs. Mary Crowe, 1108 Burgie St., Elizabethton; one sister, Mrs. Cline Church, Rt. 2, Elizabethton; two brothers, Ray Morton, of the home, and Oscar Morton, Hampton; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews also survive. Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Funeral services for Mrs. Lona Peters, 68, of Rt. 2, Hampton, will be held Friday at 2 pm from the Union Baptist Church with Rev. Floyd Ishee, Rev. Eugene Johnson and Rev. Haskel Ingram officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Church Choir. Active pallbearers: Wesley McNeal, Richard Tester, Bill Estep, Dewey Hicks, Arcie Goodwin, John Stout, Fred Cable and Lawrence Whitehead. Honorary pallbearers: Charles Peters, Ed Hazelwood, Dr. David Slagle, Ralph Smith, George Brown, Starlin Odom, Ray Burrow, Pearl Lewis, John Roberts, Albert Baker, Jeffrey Pearson, Tommy Smith, Timmy Smith, Bill Campbell, Johnny Hazelwood, Dan Crowe and Willie Jackson. Flowerbearers will be the Ladies Adult Sunday School Class, Mrs. Ann Moody, Mrs. Sarah Mae Smith (smudged). Interment will be in the Morton Cemetery.
