- Willie Mae Barnett, 96, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 25, 2019, from Hermitage Health Care in Elizabethton, following a brief illness. Willie was born on August 3, 1923 in Roan Mountain to the late Hezekiah "Hezzie" and Delia Heaton Troutman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Norman D. Barnett; her brothers, Jessie Troutman, Roy Troutman, Guy Troutman, Jack Troutman and Ralph Troutman; and one sister, Edith Troutman Street.
Willie graduated from Cloudland High School and worked as a substitute teacher at Burbank School. She worked and retired from Carter County School Systems as a cook. She enjoyed reading her Bible, old shows on TV, sight-seeing, and having her family around her.
Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Shirley Street and husband J.D., of Gray, and Janet Largent and husband Clarence, of Hampton; a son, Larry Barnett and wife Betty, of Roan Mountain; one brother, Joseph Lewis Troutman and wife Jean, of Roan Mountain; one sister-in-law, Willie Troutman; six grandchildren, Timothy S. Street and wife Karen, Todd S. Street and wife Rebecca, Timothy W. Barnett and wife Shelia, Tracy D. Barnett, Travis K. Largent and wife Debbie and Tandy M. Bradley; and nine great-grandchildren, Seth S. Street, Alexandria Street, Riley L. Barnett, Kailey P. Phillips, Kaydance M. Barnett, Kade Barnett, Brieanna Largent, Haley Largent and Chloe E. Bradley.
A graveside service to honor the life of Willie Mae Barnett will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 26, in the Troutman Cemetery in Roan Mountain with Rev. Randy English officiating. Music will be under the direction of her granddaughter, Tandy Bradley. Her grandson, Tim Barnett, will recite the 23rd Psalm. Active pallbearers will be Tim Street, Todd Street, Tim Barnett, Travis Largent, Tracy Barnett and Seth Street. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Burbank Free Will Baptist Church.
