- Luther D. Bowers, 78, 122 Darrell Bowers Road, Elizabethton, died Wednesday, August 11, 2004, at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Bowers was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Luther A. and Flaura Buckles Bowers.
Mr. Bowers was a member of Blue Springs Christian Church. He served with the U.S. Navy in World War II. He was a retired painter and a member of the National Rifle Association and the Beuladean Citizens Club
In addition to his parents, Mr. Bowers was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Survivors are his wife of 58 years, Gladys Asher Bowers, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Denny and Coralie Bowers, Elizabethton, and Jody and Lee Bowers, Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren, Teresa Freeman, Bastrop, Texas, Whitney Christiansen, Seattle, Wash., Jacob Bowers, Richmond, Va., Deana Bush, Memphis, and Sgt. Michael Bowers, U.S. Army, Fort Benning, Ga.; seven great-grandchildren, Michael K. Bowers, Fort Benning, Ga., Adam Bush, Memphis, Lucas Christiansen and Larson Christiansen, both of Seattle, Wash., Ethan Freeman, Laurin Freeman and Adleen Freeman, all of Bastrop, Texas; four sisters, Mary Evelyn Bennett, Margaret Campbell and Stella Mae Brewer, all of Elizabethton, and Novella Massengill, Bluff City; and one brother, Ola Bowers, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday, August 14, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Mr. Richard Thomason officiating. The graveside service and interment will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, August 15, in the Bowers Cemetery, Roy Bowers Road. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 1:25 p.m. for the service. Military Honors will be accorded by the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence, 122 Darrell Bowers Road, Elizabethton, or at the home of a son, Denny Bowers, 212 Roy Bowers Road, Elizabethton. Active pallbearers will be Gene Carrier, Tommy Campbell, Ronnie Campbell, Willard Loveless, Shirl Bowers and Dallas Carrier. Honorary pallbearers will be Ossie Lee Stout, Allen Thrump, R.M. Tester, John Garland, John Allen, Morris Miner and fellow members of the Beuladean Citizens Club.
