- SSG. Charlie Vines, 82, of the Fish Springs Community, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. He was the son of the late Elias Jefferson and Lena Dory Hicks Vines and was born in the Fish Springs Community of Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and Brady Vines.
He was retired from the Raytheon Corporation and was also a retired veteran of the Army National Guard. He was a member of Hampton Masonic Lodge #750 F & AM for over fifty years, and was a devoted giver and supporter of St. Judes Childrens Hospital for over thirty seven years. He was also a supporter and giver to the Disabled American Veterans and the Elizabethton/Carter Animal Shelter. He was a member of Fish Springs Baptist Church.
SSG. Vines is survived by a son, Doug Vines and his wife, Kim, Hampton; a daughter, Judy Woods, Elizabethton; a granddaughter, Jessica Whaley, Blountville; a sister, Beulah Ward, Butler; a brother, Glenn Vines, Butler; a special niece, Freda Wagner, Fish Springs and a special friend and the mother of his children, Arlene Townsend. He will also be missed by his special dog, "Little Bit".
A service to honor the life of SSG. Vines will be conducted on Monday, September 14, 2015 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Stevie Guinn officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Monday prior to the service or at the home of his sister, Beulah Ward, or his son, Doug Vines, at other times.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at 11:00 AM in the Vines Cemetery in the Fish Springs Community. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Tom McCloud will serve as honorary pallbearer. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet the family at the cemetery at 10:45 AM on Tuesday.
