- Pauline Benfield Greer, 97, passed away in the early morning hours on Friday, July 3, 2015, at her home in Elizabethton, Tenn. She was born on April 4, 1918 in Ingalls, N.C. Her parents were Elda Ollis Benfield and Floyd Preston Benfield. She was one of 10 children and is survived by one brother, Berlin Benfield. Mrs. Greer completed the 8th grade and went on to take some Business College courses at the school in Elizabethton. She worked at several jobs in her lifetime, but worked for 42 years at the North American Rayon plant, holding various jobs in multiple departments. She retired in 1984 and concentrated on her grandchildren, gardens and quilting. She loved flowers and quilting; in her lifetime, she completed over 500 quilts. Survivors include four children, Ashley, Sharon, Laura and Scott Jr. Eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren also survive. A Celebration of Life Service for Pauline Benfield Greer was conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 5, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services. The family received friends at the funeral home from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service. The graveside service was conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, July 6, in the Green Valley Baptist Church Cemetery, Spruce Pine, N.C. Active pallbearers were Jonathan, Scotty, Jeremy, Buzz, Robert and Colin. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to the staff at Amedisys Hospice for the excellent care and assistance given to Mrs. Greer in these last few years.
