- Lucille Courtner Lowe Hodge, 86, of Butler, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2018.
A native of old Butler, she was a daughter of the late Robert Allen "R.A." and Mattie Mae Neatherly Courtner.
Lucille attended Watauga Academy, graduated from Hampton High School and graduated from Tri Cities Beauty College in Johnson City. She also attended East Tennessee State College for three years. Lucille was a member of Zion Baptist Church since 2008 and a former member of Butler Baptist Church for 64 years. She was a member of Butler Chapter #218 Order of Eastern Star for 66 years going in January 3, 1952.
Lucille was owner and operator of Lucille's Beauty Shop in Butler for 15 years, employed at Johnson County Hospital in Mountain City for 15 years, and also employed at North American Rayon Corporation in Elizabethton and Northeast Correctional Center in Mountain City.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three husbands, Henry Lowe, the father of her children, M.E. Cardwell and Clyde Hodge; a daughter, Rita Lowe Stephens, Griffin, Ga.; three sisters, Chloe Lipford, Vernell Cable Boling and Frances Courtner; and three brothers, Paul, Howard and Earl Courtner.
Survivors include her daughter, Nioka Lowe Markland and husband, David; a son, Michael Allen Lowe, Elizabethton; one granddaughter, Stephanie White Campbell, and two great-granddaughters, Savannah Riley and Alexandria Marie Campbell, all of Taylors, S.C.; her special step-daughter, Helen Renfro and husband Gene, Johnson City; one special step-grandson, Gene Renfro and wife Katie, Johnson City; several nieces and great-nephews, including one special niece, Carolyn Wood, Concord, Tenn.
Funeral services for Lucille Courtner Lowe Hodge will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Dr. D. Alan King, Dr. James Richardson and Rev. Sherrill Nave officiating. Music will be provided by the Zion Baptist Church Choir, her daughter, Nioka Markland, Jean Osborne and Jennifer Hughes, pianists. Interment will follow in the Butler Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Daniel Wood officiating. Active pallbearers will be Teddy Greenwell, Jerry Lyons, Harry Pierce, Gene Renfro, Willie McVay and Freddy Julian. Honorary pallbearers will be her church families at Zion Baptist Church and Butler Baptist Church, members of Butler Chapter #218 Order of Eastern Star and her many friends in the Butler Community. A Masonic Service will follow the funeral service by Butler Chapter #218, Order of Eastern Star.
