- Mary Alice Hammitt, age 91, left her earthly family on July 29th to be with her heavenly family, at Lakebridge Healthcare, following a lengthy illness.
She was born September 25th, 1921, to John Wesley Ward and Mary Ann Presnell Ward. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Murphy Lee Hammitt, in 1975. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Dewey, Clifton, Gar and Howard; and by three sisters, Martha Barr, Eve Presnell and Bessie Presnell.
She was a member of Happy Valley Church of Jesus Christ and was famous for her delicious soup beans and fantastic biscuits.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Edna and Mack Presnell, Johnson City; son, Billy Hammitt, Clarksville, Georgia; Brothers, Calvin, Johnson City, James, Erwin, and William Mocksville, N.C.; grandchildren, Dwight and Angela Presnell and Crystal Mitchell, Johnson City; Great grandchildren; Garrison, Sarah Presnell and Cody Mitchell, Johnson City; great great grandson, Preston Mitchell, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Hammitt will be conducted at Appalachian Funeral Home Thursday, August 1, 2013, at 8:00 P.M. with Brother Dewey Ward and Brother Eric Brown officiating. Music will be under the direction of Flossie Hamilton.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until the service hour, or at her daughter's home at other times.
Graveside service and interment will be Friday, August 2nd, 2013, at 10:30 A.M. at Highland Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be selected from the family and friends.
