- Comer Broyles, 76, Rt. 3, Elizabethton, died Tuesday morning in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital after a brief illness.
A native of Virginia, he was the son of the late Henry Luther and Senia Comer Broyles and had lived in Carter County for a number of years. Mr. Broyles was a retired farmer and a member of the Harmony Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Nellie McGhee Broyles, October 10, 1983, and by a son, Gene Edward Broyles.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Norma) Sheffield of Elizabethton, and Mrs. Larry (Edith) Scalf of Watauga; eight sons, Fred, Robert, Floyd, Dewey, Raymond, Haskel, Conley and Preston Broyles, all of Elizabethton, and Beryl Broyles, Abingdon, Va.; three sisters, Mrs. Zella McReynolds of Bristol, and Mrs. Hubert (Viola) Greene and Mrs. Hoover (Dorothy) Crowe, both of Elizabethton; and three brothers, Howard Broyles of Bluff City, Joe Broyles, Fort Myers, Fla., and Walter Paige Broyles of Butler. Sixteen grandchildren, Terry, David, Tim, Diana, Regina, Teresa, Sheila Haskel, Wayne, Kelli and Kristi Broyles, Sara Sheffield, Donna Merrit, Allen, Keith, Chris and Cindy Scalf; and one great-grandchild, Achlee Scalf.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Hubert Greene officiating. Interment will be in the Crumley Cemetery, Bluff City. Active pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Bob Reynolds, Jerome Daugherty, Arlie Reece and Floyd Reece.
