- Mr. Claude Matheson age 98, passed away March 27, 2013, at Lakebridge Health Care Center, Johnson City, TN.
Mr. Matheson was a native and life-long resident of Stout Branch, Neva, Johnson County, TN. Uncle Claude was known as a man of integrity, strength and character; always a gentleman.
Mr. Matheson was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry Matheson and Catherine Stout Matheson; wife, Gertrude Butler Matheson; sister, Sallie Matheson Fritts; brothers, Raleigh, infant Paul, Earl and Barton Matheson.
Mr. Matheson was a graduate of Pine Grove School and Johnson County High School and attended East Tennessee State College. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and taught at Oak Grove, Fritts Curve and Rock Springs before entering the United States Army in 1943. He served in the European Theatre of Operations as a medical technician, 1943-1946, at England's 40th General Hospital in World War II. He served with honor and distinction and was awarded the Meritorious Service Award, American Theatre Ribbon, European Theatre Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal and Bronze Star Medal with clusters.
Upon his return from service, he taught in the Johnson County Veterans Farm Program for five years.
Mr. Matheson was a life-time member and deacon of Pine Grove Baptist Church, taught Young and Adult Men Sunday School and served as Superintendent. He was a lifetime active member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Mountain City. He was a charter member of the Johnson County Senior Citizens Club and the Johnson County Historical Society.
In addition to serving as a teacher and soldier, he was a life-long farmer of property owned by the Matheson family since before 1850. He retired in 1975 after a career with the United States Department of Agriculture as a field representative serving in Carter, Johnson and Unicoi Counties.
Survivors include nieces: Nancy Tester (Herman), Betty Hilbert (Sammy) and Doris Stout; nephews: Edwin Matheson (Martha) and Barry Matheson (Marcia); great nieces: Linda Carter, Brenda Isham, Lisa Phillips, Amy Boling and Whitney Tiggott; great nephews: Bobby Gentry, Rob Tester, Roland Tester, Jeremy Matheson, Aaron Hilbert and Hunter Matheson; several great great nieces and great great nephews.
Services are scheduled to be held from Pine Grove Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 30, 2013, with Reverend Michael Garland officiating. Eulogy will be given by Mr. Barry Watson; music by the church choir and Michael Garland.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. before the service.
Military graveside and interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Mountain City. The Johnson County Honor Guard will provide military honors. Serving as pallbearers will be Herman Tester, Sammy Hilbert, Terry Matheson, Jeremy Matheson, Richard Watson and John Shull.
Mr. Matheson enjoyed the friendships of residents and staff at Broadmore Senior Living and Lakebridge Health Care Center where he lived for the past six and one half years. The family expresses special appreciation for the excellent care and love provided to Uncle Claude by the staff and administration of Lakebridge and sincere thanks to Pastor Mike's Ministry, Chaplain Mac and Antioch Church Ministry for providing him many spiritual blessings during the last years of his life.
