- Lexie Phipps Garland, age 89, of Johnson City, died Friday, April 4, 2008. Lexie was born Friday, January 24, 1919 in Johnson County, TN, having lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was a member of Keystone Freewill Baptist Church where she was a former deacon?s wife and Sunday school teacher. She was formerly employed at Bemberg, Elizabethton, TN. Lexie was the daughter of the late John Hamilton Phipps, who preceded her in death in 1947, and the late Amanda Eliza Wilkins Phipps, who preceded her in death in 1972. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Selmar Garland in 1983, three brothers, Steve Phipps, Johnny Phipps and Peter Phipps, and two sisters, Leticia Phipps and Myrtle Phipps Heaton. Survivors include two sons and one daughter, eldest child, James Thomas Garland of Knoxville; twins, Ronald David Garland of Knoxville and Judy Ann Garland Sluder & husband David Sluder of Elizabethton. Also surviving are one brother, Coy Phipps and one sister, Mary Phipps Byrd and husband Rev. D.C. Byrd, all of Johnson City; one sister-in-law, Lena Phipps of Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to express a special ?Thank You? to the entire staff of NHC Nursing Home, Johnson City for their loving care and support. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2008 at Monte Vista Memorial Park with Rev. Bill Greer officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Sunday, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home chapel at 2:00 p.m. Sunday to go in procession to the cemetery.
