- SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. — Cmdr. William J. Blevins, age 89, of Satellite Beach, FL, died on June 7, 2011, at Holmes Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Doeville, Tennessee. He was the son of the late Ira William Blevins and Nelia Pleasant Blevins.
He was preceded in death by his loving and faithful wife, Will Nell "Billie" Blevins, in 1995; four brothers, Dr. Sells Blevins, Dr. Justin Cline Blevins, Dr. Carson Blevins and Dr. Raymond Dean Blevins, all of Johnson City, Tennessee.
Cmdr. Blevins was a graduate of Johnson County High School, Mountain City, Tenn., and Georgia Tech University with a degree in Engineering.
He entered the US Navy and was a veteran of WWII, as well as the Korean and Vietnam wars. He worked for NASA while stationed at Patrick Air Force Base and served with honor and distinction at the Pentagon with the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He took a position in the US State Department with the Agency for International Development (USAID) and lived and worked in countries such as Kenya, Uganda and Brazil from 1967-1971.
He is survived by a daughter, Angela Yvonne Bretton, of Melbourne; a son, Dr. Michael William Blevins, of Satellite Beach; and a granddaughter, Melanie Weaver, of Hamdan, Connecticut. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary B. Murray, of Vero Beach, FL, and Wanda Vee B. Dugger and husband, Delmas, of Johnson City, Tennessee. Relatives include several nieces and nephews and a very special caretaker, Victoria "Princess Vicki" Kupec.
William was a member of Oceanside Community Church in Satellite Beach and read his Bible daily. He will forever be remembered as a kind and loving soul and will be truly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
There will be a visitation from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2011, at Florida Memorial Funeral Home followed by a funeral service in the chapel at 10 a.m.
Entombment will follow at Florida Memorial Gardens.
