- Larry Dwane Duncan, 77, passed away on Sept. 10, 2018, in Norfolk, Va. Larry was born March 29, 1941 in Bakersville's Ledger community.
Larry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Brenda Tolley of Cranberry. He is also survived by his beloved sons: Derrick of Norfolk, Va., and Blake of Virginia Beach, Va. He also leaves behind a wonderful daughter-in-law: Leslee, and two much loved sisters to carry on his memory: Donna Duncan of Gastonia, NC and Gayle Duncan Burleson and her husband, Steve, of Belmont, NC.
One of Larry's favorite people was Brenda's sister, Grace Lee Tolley, of the Henson Creek neighborhood in Avery County. Larry would sit on her porch, look at the mountains, and frequently say, "I'm restoring my soul." Larry has many relatives and friends in Mitchell County, and a substantial number of extended family members residing in Avery County, including his mother-in-law: Helen Hughes of Linville. Other relatives are Brenda's siblings, Michael Hughes, Gary Tolley and Burl Tolley of Avery County, H.D. Tolley of Marietta, Ga., and Becky Tolley Harrison of Martinez, Ga.
Larry was preceded in death by his mother and father, Frances Young Duncan and "Bill" Duncan, originally of the Ledger community, in addition to both of Larry's revered younger brothers: Roger Duncan of Belmont, NC and Terry Duncan of Marion, NC. Roger's wife, Lois Duncan, resides in Belmont, and Terry's wife, Vicky Duncan, resides in Marion.
In the Duncan family, Larry has three nieces, one nephew, six great nieces and three great nephews, and one great, great nephew whom he did not live to see.
Larry deeply loved his family, and showed it regularly by giving them books, mostly from his vast library. Larry also deeply loved his 4,000-plus students and his numerous friends and colleagues. Larry's life mission and passions were learning all he could about everything, sharing this knowledge with his fellow teachers and students, and teaching English literature, Shakespearean Drama and science fiction literature to teenagers for 41 years.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Bear Creek Baptist Church in Bakersville's Ledger community during the Christmas season, with date and time to be determined.
