- James Emerson (Pop) Heaton, 90, of Minneapolis, NC, passed away Saturday, September 20, 2008, at the Roan Highlands Nursing Center.
A son of the late Lige and Sarah Pritchard Heaton, he was a US Navy Veteran of World War II, having served on the USS Roper. He had attended Tennessee Wesleyan, Milligan College, and graduated from East Tennessee State University. He was a retired Teacher and Coach, having served 44 years at Unaka High School and Cloudland High School in Tennessee and Cranberry High School and Avery County High School in North Carolina.
He was a member and Elder of the Minneapolis Christian Church, where he has served as Sunday School Superintendent and Teacher. He was a Mason and Shriner and had served as a Scoutmaster with Boy Scouts.
He was a beloved Baseball, Football and Basketball Coach; received several Teacher of the Year Recognitions; and had been named Avery County Man of the Year.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Frank, Harry and Bill Heaton; sisters, Corinth Oxendine, Annabelle Hitchew, Betty Sue Heaton and Eloise Gray.
He leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Mava Young Heaton, of the home; son, Jim H. Heaton and his wife, Pam, of Johnson City, TN; daughter, Lucia H. Spratt and her husband, Barry, of Marion, NC; brothers, Ed Heaton and his wife, Betty, of Gray, TN, Robert Heaton and his wife, Brickie, of Colonial Heights, TN, Paul Heaton and his wife, Frances, of Pawley Island, SC; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services for James Emerson (Pop) Heaton will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 23, from the Minneapolis Christian Church with Mr. Jim Greene and Dr. Eddie Fine officiating.
Interment will follow in the Minneapolis Cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
