- Charlie H. Whitehead, 95, Roan Highlands Nursing Center, Roan Mountain, passed away Monday, December 1, 2008.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Larkin L. and Nannie Largent Whitehead. He was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation. He was a member of the Little Mountain Baptist Church and the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge #566.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Robert, Joe, Grant, Ed and Lawrence Whitehead; a half brother, Earl Whitehead; one sister, Emma Whitehead; and three half sisters, Vicie Barnett, Sudie Hill and Gertrude Birchfield.
Survivors include his wife: Sarah Guinn Whitehead; A son & daughter-in-law: Leon and Louise Whitehead, Roan Mountain; Two Daughters and One son-in-law: Della Sue Whitehead, Elizabethton, and Loretta & Jimmy McKinney, Roan Mountain; Grandsons: Michael McKinney and wife, Raquel, Piney Flats, Mark McKinney and wife, April, Knoxville, Chris Whitehead and wife, Shannon, Roan Mountain; Great Grandsons: Hunter Scott McKinney and Christopher Blake Whitehead; Two Great Granddaughters: Rachel McKinney and Lilly Kate McKinney; Several Nieces & Nephews, including a special niece, Christine Malone; His Special Friends: Hurley Davis, Eddie Julian, Becky Lewis, Mr. & Mrs. Nathan Brown.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Delaney Berry officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Happy Valley Memorial Park.
Active Pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Thursday, will be Estel Whitehead, Jerry Whitehead, Tony Whitehead, Jeremy Cole, Bobby Hill, Ed Johnson, Cecil Largent, Mike Blevins, Raymond Hill, Larry Davis and David Davis. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Joe Williams, Otis Guinn, Bernie Hill, Jerry Cole, Charles Jones, J.D. McKinney and the Over the Mountain Men.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Friends may also call at the residence of the son Leon Whitehead, 157 Holly Hill Road, Roan Mountain, or the residence of a daughter Loretta McKinney, 309 Heaton Ridge Road, Roan Mountain.
The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to the Roan Highlands Nursing Center for all their love and care. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Thursday to go to the cemetery
