- Murel Ed Matherly, 93, of Johnson City, passed away on Monday, June 22, 2009.
Born in Butler, TN, he was the son of the late Edward and Georgia Cress Matherly.
He was a member of Unaka Avenue Baptist Church. Mr. Matherly proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II.
He was the founder of Clutch and Brake Supply Company in Johnson City and later of Clutch and Brake of Asheville. He retired in 2004 when he sold the business.
Mr. Matherly was a graduate of Watauga Academy in Butler and Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. He was a past member of the Civitan Club, member of Automotive Parts Rebuilders Association and active supporter.
He had a true passion for the Haven of Mercy, where he served on the board of directors.
Known as a kind, honest, caring, and giving man, he always put others first. He displayed all of the "fruits of the spirit," particularly patience and kindness. He had a great love for his family and spoiled his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed his work, inventing things, rock collecting, making candles and gardening.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Bonnie Lee Matherly, Esther Wagner; and brother, Guy Matherly.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Lydia Sluder Matherly, of Johnson City; daughters, Mary Gail Matherly Keown (Larry), of Calhoun, GA, and Melissa Matherly Clemons (Phil), of Kingsport; son, Roger Matherly (Mary June), of Asheville, NC; sisters, Mildred Cole, of Butler, Virginia Davis (Junior), of Butler, Marge Bailey, of Greensboro, NC, Marie Rankins Williams, of Mountain City, and Sue Pierce, of Mountain City; brother, Ebb Matherly (Marie), of Butler, and Paul Matherly (Alfreda), of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Josh Keown, of Roanoke, VA, and Lindsey Keown, of Athens, GA; Katherine Clemons, of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Suzanne Clemons, of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews and numerous friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the VA Home Based Primary Care, Home Instead Senior Care of Jonesborough and caregivers, Lindsey, Kathy and Wendy.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday at 7:00 PM at Tetrick Funeral Services with Pastor Steve Whitt and Rev. Michael Dickerson officiating. Music will be provided by Melissa Clemons and Anthony Harris.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM prior to the service.
A graveside service will be held on Friday at 11:00 AM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Bill Smith, Jim Williams, Bill Sluder, Jimmie Hubbard, Josh Keown, Tim Stone, Don Rankin. Honorary pallbearers will be Lynn Greever, Clifford Gilbert, Jim Burleson, Doyle Cloyd, J.D. Hoover, John Tipton, Cecil Scalf, Jeff Blackburn and Wylie Milhorn. Everyone is asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:00 AM for procession to the cemetery.
