- ELIZABETHTON - Mr. Ralph Brown Grindstaff, 85, 1267 Charity Hill Road , Elizabethton, died on Saturday, December 16, 2006, in the Hermitage Health Center following an extended illness.
Mr. Grindstaff was the son of the late Letha Garland and was a native of Carter County. He enjoyed attending Hampton Church of God. He was a retired welder and heavy equipment operator. He especially enjoyed woodworking, making children's rockers and other furniture. He was well known in his neighborhood as the "fix it" man. Mr. Grindstaff served in the US Army and was a veteran of WWII.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Grindstaff was preceded in death by two daughters, Frances Deloach and Lorraine Lippard; and a grandson, Keith Deloach.
Mr. Grindstaff is survived by his wife, Edna Nidiffer Grindstaff, of the home; four sons and daughters-in-law, The Rev. Carl and Janie Grindstaff, Sam and Melissa Grindstaff, all of Elizabethton, Charles Lester and Patricia Grindstaff, of Johnson City, The Rev. Paul and Sherry Grindstaff, of Hildebran, NC; two daughters and one son-in-law, Margaret Bobbitt, of Elizabethton, and Louise and Estill Sherrill, of Morrison, TN; one step-son and step-daughter-in-law, The Rev. Charles and Givia Russell, of Elizabethton; three step daughters and two step sons-in-law, Ann Jenkins, of Elizabethton, Elaine and Charles Greene, of Hildebran, NC, Debbie and Barry Rayfield, of Hickory, NC; two sisters, Pat Long, Shady Valley, TN; Sylvia Garland, GA; thirty three grandchildren; and several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Grindstaff will be conducted on Monday, December 18, 2006, at 8:00 p.m. in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home, with The Rev. Hobart Bradshaw officiating. The Family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6:00-8:00 Monday, prior to the service, and at the residence at other times. The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Tuesday, December 19, 2006, at 11:00 AM in the Davenport Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men of the Hampton Church of God.
Those wishing to attend are requested to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 on Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
