William Van Deventer had 2 sons. The first we believe was J. A. VanDeventer
which probably stood for James Alexande r. His next son, about 3years younger,
was Andrew Hartman Van Deventer. Andr ew was born inMidway Tennessee (Greene
County) in 1883.
There is a charcoal/ watercolor drawing of Mary Hurtt with the 2 boys. Onthe
back of the drawing is a gallery stamp that is dated 1887 HuntingtonW. VA. We
don't know if they w ere ever in Huntington or if the artistwas a travelling
representative.
When Andrew was 5 years old in 1888 his mother died in childbirth with afemale
baby which also perished. Not wanting to be saddled with childrearing, William
ga ve the two boys to his sister in law Calley (Hurtt)and her husband John
Bleven (or Blevins) to raise. They had no childrenof their own and took the
boys to Butler Town. Butler Town is believedto be an area about a mile from
Middle C reek Church near Oliver Springs,Tennessee.
On an application for employment wi th the Great Northern Railway atSpokane in
1907, Andrew lists his father as W. D. Vandeventer of Morley,Tennessee.
