- GRAY - Roy W. "Jim" Hicks, 85, of Gray, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at his residence. He was a native of Sullivan County and son of the late Roy Bell Hicks and Ethel May Lyle.
Mr. Hicks was of the Baptist faith and a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. He enjoyed gardening, farming, raising tobacco and storytelling. He was a talented hardworking man who loved being a truck driver and worked for Empire for 50 years without missing a days' worth of work. He was able to do that because of the love and support of his wife.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Hamby Hicks of 57 years, daughter in law, Carole Hicks, son in law, Danny Cox, and a great grandchild, Devon Haws.
Survivors include his children: Pamela Feathers of Johnson City, James Hicks of Florida, Roy A. Hicks of Gray, Cynthia Torbett and husband Larry Miller of Gray, Peggy Laws and husband Billy of Johnson City and Nancy Cox of Gray; sister, Cleo Sanford of Johnson City; brother James Blevins; aunt Ada Umbarger; eleven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends: Edward Bowman and wife, Henry Harris, and Larry Crouch.
The family will greet friends to share memories on Monday, February 13, 2017 from 5:00 pm until a Celebration of Jim's Life at 7:00 pm in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral and Cremation Services Johnson City with Reverend Ed Davis officiating. A Graveside and Committal Service will held on Tuesday at 2:00 pm at Monte Vista Memorial Park in Johnson City, TN. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Everyone is asked to meet at the funeral home by 1:15 pm to go in procession to the cemetery.
