- Found 1850 & 1860 in Johnson Co., TN census married to Martha 'Patsy' working as a farmer, could not read or write. Owned $800 in land 1850. (me) In 1860 census Nicholas' mother, Mary Grindstaff, age 84, Rebecca Wilson age 22, a daughter of Isaac and Mary Heaton Grindstaff and Sarah Wilson age 1 a grand niece were in their household. (Doris Brown). Cannot read or write, real estate value $800 (1850 census) Will dated 24 May 1863 proved July Term 1863. Wife Martha, Youngest sons: John Emmert and Nicholas Rosencrans Grindstaff...land known as old Potter tract except that part of said tract conveyed to General William Grindstaff, my 3 sons living. To Daughter Susannah Stout, wife of Thomas Stout...to son George...to sons Jacob F.; Isaac and G.V.(W.) Excrs: son Jacob F. Grindstaff and R.R. Butler Witnesses: David H. Miller; J.M.
