- ELIZABETHTON — John Ashley, age 91, 1812 Gap Creek Rd., Elizabethton, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007, in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness.
He was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Jim and Harriett Grindstaff Ashley. Mr. Ashley attended True Gospel Baptist Church and was a member of Highpoint Baptist Church. He retired from Gordon's Furniture after ten years of service. Mr. Ashley served with the US Army during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
Survivors are his wife, Margie Montgomery Ashley, of the home, one daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Joe Nave, one son, Johnny Ashley, all of Elizabethton; two granddaughters, Tammy Ashley, Elizabethton, Patty Jo Singleton, Roan Mountain; three great-grandchildren, Patricia Singleton, Jacob Singleton and Nico Ashley; and one sister, Annie Potter, Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Ashley will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 30, in the Tetrick Funeral Home Riverside Chapel with Evangelist Dean Presnell officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 p.m. Friday prior to the service in the chapel. Friends may also call at the residence at anytime.
The graveside service and interment will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 31, in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Everyone is welcome to meet the family at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Montgomery, Champ Montgomery, Dr. Miguel Ossorio, Dr. Jay Mehta and the nursing staff of James H. Quillen VA Medical Center Hospital and Ivy Hall employees.
