- Howard William Jewett, 81, Elizabethton, a native of Johnson County, who lived most of his life in Carter County, passed away at the Burgess Square Healthcare Center in Westmont, Illinois on Saturday, February 20, 2016 where he was taken to be closer to his daughter and her family. His birthday would have been March 13th. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Knights of the Blue Nose based on his service at a Strategic Air Base in Thule, Greenland.
He was a graduate of Happy Valley High School and Elizabethton Business College from 1970-1974 in which he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Higher Accounting and Business Management. Howard utilized his Bachelor's degree and started his own business, Howard's Shop E-Z at the corner of Holly Lane and W. Elk Avenue, Elizabethton. Later in life he also started a second business, Howard's Shop E-Z II on West G Street in Elizabethton. According to his past customers, his "hotdogs" will never be forgotten. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, going out to restaurants, especially Bojangles and watching western movies. He also enjoyed a good basketball or football game.
Howard was a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Frank and Alice Wagner Jewett of Butler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Louise D. Buckles Jewett and his brother, Vaughn Jewett, Elizabethton. He will be deeply missed by his daughter, Sheila Jeannette Bailey and son-in-law, Bill E. Bailey, his grandchildren: Bill G. Bailey, Brandy A. Bailey and Jesse L. Bailey who resides in Darien, Illinois, his half-brother, Frank "Buster" Jewett and wife Linda of Doylestown, Ohio, his nieces, Judy Massey, and Tammy Simerly, Elizabethton and Lisa Jewett of Ohio along whit his nephews Keith Massey, Johnson City, Kenneth Jewett, and Larry Jewett, Elizabethton and Frank Jewett, Jr. of Ohio. His Sister-In-Law: Mrs. Francis Jewett of Elizabethton.
A Service to honor the life of Howard Jewett will take place at 7 p.m. Friday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Pastor Mark Fowler officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, February 27, 2016 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Greg Ruston and the Pleasant Beach Baptist Church. Pallbearers will be selected from family and in-laws, James J. Bailey and Carl L. Bailey. Military Honors will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard. The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to Dr. Alan Cox of Life Care Center, Elizabethton for his care and consideration of Howard also James John & Nancy Bailey and Carl Lynn & Debbie Bailey.
