A native of Johnson County, he had practiced medicine in the area for many years. He was a member of the Rock Springs Baptist Church and a member of the Roan Creek Lodge F. & A.M. of Butler. He was recently awarded a 50-year certificate by the lodge. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Mollie Proffitt; three sons, J. G. and John H. of Cumberland, Va., and Sam of Williamsburg, Va.; two daughters, Mrs. Jane West and Mrs. Pearlie Matheson, both of Butler; two brothers, John of Elizabethton and Cannon of Oregon, and six grandchildren.
