- Dixie Houston Carpenter, 85, of Crossnore, passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2023, at Heritage Assisted Living in Newland, NC.
Dixie was born May 7, 1938 in Avery County to the late Myrtle and Robert Houston.
Dixie graduated from Cranberry High School in 1956. She retired from Baxter Healthcare. One of her greatest joys in life was teaching Sunday school, which she did for 50 years at Stamey Town Baptist Church where she was a member. She was a lover of animals, reading, cooking, and was a self -declared chocoholic. She was a welcoming and nonjudgmental friend to all, and she was known for her joyful personality and quick wit. She was the epitome of what a Christian should be and practiced what she preached.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Tommy Carpenter of Crossnore; daughters: Christine Calloway (Terry) of Three Mile and Joyce Nations (Tom) of Crossnore; granddaughters: Cailan Calloway (Shawn) of Morganton and Ceara Cuthbertson (Chris) of Morganton; great grandchild, Lola Cuthbertson of Morganton; step grandchildren: Karen Deweese of Clyde, Karla Payne (Matt) of Weaverville, Tommy Nations (Stephanie) of Balsam; step great grandchildren Kailey and Jillian Payne of Weaverville, Lydia and Eden Deweese of Clyde and a host of loving nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her three brothers Woodrow, Roy and Alfred Houston and grandson Ian Calloway.
A Celebration of Life service was held at 2 p.m. on July 1, 2023, at Stamey Town Baptist Church (660 Stamey Branch Rd, Newland, NC 28657) with Pastor Jeff Brewer officiating. The family greeted friends for a visitation before the service from noon to 2 p.m.
