- Diane L. Lawrence, 74, died at her home in Greenville, South Carolina under hospice care on Tuesday, April 19, 2016.
Born in 1941 in Wilmington, Delaware, she was the daughter of Clifford and Florence Rutter. After graduating from P.S. DuPont High School in 1959, she left Delaware for college at Lycoming College, Williamsport, PA thus beginning her life's incredible journey.
After college graduation, she taught high school English and Spanish in New Jersey. She then became a realtor and advanced to a management level in the mortgage insurance/purchase business from which she retired in 2005.
Diane married Chuck Lawrence in 1985 settling in Buffalo, New York. Diane was proud that she had visited all 50 states, and she and Chuck had many wonderful adventures traveling to Central and South America, as well as Europe. Diane also traveled to India for a mission trip followed by a week long exploration of the country. Diane and Chuck enjoyed hiking - spending many days in the Adirondack Mountains of New York. As a member of the Adirondack Mountain Club, Diane became a 46er for hiking all 46 high peaks in that range. She became a competitive race walker, winning the Marine Corps Championship for her age group in 2004 and competing in the Senior Olympics. The couple's activities also included snowshoeing, cross country skiing, canoeing, tennis, spending time in Captiva, Florida, and visiting their many friends across the country. In 2005, Diane and Chuck moved to Greenville, South Carolina and enjoyed the hiking and outdoor activities available in the warmer climate. Chuck and Diane became active in their faith community at Greenville United Universalist Fellowship, and continued their love of classical music - attending many concerts and theatre productions. They also attended many classes at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute on the Furman University Campus.
Diane is survived by her son, Mickey McMullin, sisters Gerry and Louise (Lana) and brother Larry (Ramatu), 3 nephews and 2 nieces. She is also remembered by Chuck's sons David, Stephen and Todd as they were a part of her life for 30 years - the length of her marriage to her husband Chuck who predeceased her in July, 2015.
