- Bessie Mae Mathes, 92, South Central Community in Chuckey, went to be with her Lord Saturday afternoon, October 25, 2008, at Johnson City Medical Center.
Mrs. Mathes was a homemaker and a member of Liberty Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors: two sons and daughters-in-law: Bill and Velma Mathes, of Piney Flats, Tennessee; Henry and JoAnn Mathes, of Chuckey; daughter: Jewell Gulley, of Mosheim; five grandchildren: Brenda Shelton and spouse, Woodrow, Danny Mathes and spouse, Leslie, Karen Ford and spouse, Eddie, Travis Mathes and Heather Markland and spouse, David; seven great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; special friends: Emma Landers, Margaret Range and Sabie Wilson.
She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Cindy Carter Graham and was preceded in death by her husband: Hobart Mathes; a son: Tommy Ray Mathes; a grandson: Michael Gulley; five brothers: Bill, John, Jim, Jack and Sam Graham; and two sisters: Florence Constable and Maggie Graham.
The funeral service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Chapel, Asheville Highway.
Interment will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Liberty Cemetery. Rev. Gary Norton and Mr. Howard Painter will officiate.
Pallbearers will be John Graham Jr., Kyle Graham, Joe Martin, David Markland, Steve Painter and Terry Graham. Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Ford, Woodrow Shelton, Allen Painter, Andrew Landers and the staff of the Center on Health and Aging in Erwin.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Kiser-Rose Hill Funeral Home on the Asheville Highway. It is requested that family and friends meet at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday at Liberty Cemetery for the committal service.
