- ELIZABETHTON — Roy D. Ellis, age 84, 106 Mayfield Dr., Elizabethton, passed away at his home Saturday, October 25, 2008, after a brief illness.
He was a native of Wise County, VA, but spent most of his years in Carter County. Mr. Ellis was the son of the late John and Mary Dingus Ellis. He was preceded in death by a son: Harold Wayne Ellis, three sisters: Elizabeth Dugger, Florene Guinn, Carie Jane Donnelly, and a brother: Raymond Ellis.
Mr. Ellis is survived by his wife: Gwina Jackson Ellis of the home; a daughter and son-in-law: Linda and Gary Autry, Cocoa Beach, FL; two sons and one daughter-in-law: Roy Lynn Ellis, Merritt Island, FL, Dennis and Sheila Ellis, Elizabethton; a grandson: Jarrod Ellis, Elizabethton; a granddaughter: Sophia Ellis, Merritt Island, FL; a sister and brother-in-law: Bobbie and Wilson Ornduff, Elizabethton; two nieces and two nephews.
Mr. Ellis attended Fairview Baptist Church, Watauga. He had a membership of fifty-eight years in the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local #538 of Johnson City, having served as business manager before retirement. Mr. Ellis served as chairman of the Carter County Democratic Party. He coached many years in Babe Ruth Leagues. He and Carmen Dugger coached a semi-pro baseball team called the Road Runners in the early seventies. The team was made up of classmates and college friends of Harold and Dennis Ellis.
Mr. and Mrs. Ellis liked to travel in their motor home since their retirement. They spent the winter months in Florida for twenty years spending a lot of time with their two children who reside there.
The funeral service for Mr. Ellis will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 30 in the Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with Rev. Kenneth Jordan officiating. The eulogy will be delivered by Mr. Willie Church. Music will be under the direction of LeAnn Manning and Mark Odom, soloists and Scott Reynolds, organist. Interment will follow in the Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Roger D. Lambert, Hammond Steffey, Jeff Whitson, James Murray, Don Morgan, Harry Ford, Steve Burrough and Eddie Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be Ron Albright, Ernie Campbell, Richard Campbell, William Webb, Raymond Holtsclaw, Carmen Dugger, Glen Davis, W. C. Rasnick, Allen Goodwin, Austin Goodwin, Willie Church, Jim Murray, Edward Haney, Doug Rasnick, Dean Robinson, Jim Campbell, Jimmy Ensor, Kenneth Norton and friends of Fairview Baptist Church and remaining members of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local #538.
The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, October 29 in the chapel.
