- Robert Lee Martin, 91, departed his blessed life Sunday, March 3, 2013, at home with his family.
He was born on May 14, 1921, in Winston Salem, the son of William Henry Martin and Jenny Estelle Sledge.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 63 years, Lou Burleson; children, Bill, Susy, Melynda, Cindy and Robby; sister, Mildred Butt of McLean, Va.; 14 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, relatives and friends.
Martin was a man with a profound faith, a curious mind, and a happy heart. As a member of "the greatest generation," he served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He attended Appalachian State Teachers' College on the GI Bill, got his Master's there, and later took additional courses at George Washington University. He was a teacher and administrator in schools from Kinshasa in the Congo to Midway Island in the Pacific, as well as in the outskirts of our nation's capital and in Winston-Salem. He also worked for the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington as Assistant Director of Education. He came to Crossnore in the early 70's and worked as Executive Director of The Crossnore School.
