Common Ancestor - Thomas DeLoach and Patience Allen

Thomas DeLoach is believed to have been the first son of William DeLoach and his wife Judith Wall. Thomas was born in about 1726 in Brunswick County, Virginia, and died in Edgefield County, Sounty Carolina in about 1805. In about 1749, he married Patience Allen, the daughter of Andrew Allison. They had three sons, Michael Allison DeLoach(1750), Thomas DeLoach, Jr.(1759), and Samuel DeLoach(1762). Descendants of these three sons can now be found throughout the United States. Nine of the DeLoach DNA Project participants are descendants of these three brothers, and there DNA test results provide a very close match.

Haplotype R1b

Haplogroup R1b (Y-DNA)

R1b is thought to be the direct descendant of Cro-Magnon, in other words of the oldest Homo Sapiens settlers in Europe. It is by far the most common in Western Europe, reaching over 90% of the population in some parts of western France, northern Spain or Ireland. It is subdivided in numerous subclades.

Common Ancestor - William DeLoach and Judith Wall

William DeLoach, Jr., is believed to have been the first son of William DeLoach, Sr., and Eleanor Collins. He was born in Surry County, Virginia and about 1702, and died in Kershaw County, South Carolina in about 1765. It is believed that William and Eleanor had six sons:
Thomas, born in about 1726 in Brunswick County, Virginia
William, born in about 1728 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina
Michael, born in about 1732 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina
Hardy, born in about 1736 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina
Jesse, born in about 1742 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina
David, born in about 1752 in Craven County, South Carolina.
We have two project participants whose common ancestry is William DeLoach and Judith Wall.

Haplotype E1b1b

Haplogroup E1b1b (Y-DNA)

Scientists believe that haplogroup E1b1b originated in the Near East, and spread across the Mediterranean and North Africa during the Neolithic. It may also have spread up through the Balkans into northwestern Europe, becoming a minority admixture in Germany and Denmark, and eventually arriving in England with the Anglo-Saxons and the Danes. Judging from the results of the Capelli study, we may conclude that E1b1b is not associated with either Norse Viking settlement or the Q- Celtic speakers of Ireland and northern Scotland.

The highest level of E1b1b among the Capelli samples appears in Southwell, once part of the Danelaw zone, but most of the elevated levels appear outside the main areas of Anglo-Saxon and Danish settlement. Moreover, the ratio of E1b1b to I1a/I1b/I1c in all these areas is 2 to 6 times higher than that in the Germany/Denmark sample. This suggests that E1b1b in Britain may have had additional sources.

Phoenicians and other traders from the Mediterranean may have brought E1b1b to Britain in the centuries before Christ. It could also been brought to Britain in more recent times by Iberian sailors, Viking slave traders or Norman administrators and Flemish merchants of Portuguese Sephardic ancestry.

Norman administrators and Flemish merchants of Portuguese Sephardic ancestry. Almost certainly, it arrived with Roman troops and settlers from such places as Mauretania, Asturias, Syria and Mesopotamia. The population of Roman Britain is now thought to have been between 3 and 4 million, greater than at any other time until the late Middle Ages. Respected scholars believe that at least 75 percent of the English population has some Roman DNA.
