952 An angel came and took Edna Fields Baldwin’s hand on April 29, and she went to Heaven to be with Jesus at the age of 90 years old.
She had lived by herself until 2021 when her health began declining, but now we rejoice that she will again be with her husband of 55 years, Harrison Baldwin, who passed away in 2002. They had made their home in Banner Elk, NC where she retired from Grandfather Home for Children after serving for 25 years. Here she made lasting friendships with the staff and children, enjoying their visits even after retirement. They lovingly referred to her as “Mrs. B.”

Edna was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ in Newland, NC and most referred to her as an “Old Timey Prayer Warrior.” Her faith in God was never ending and it was this faith that she instilled in her family.
She was the beloved mother of six children: Danny Baldwin (deceased) and wife, Jan of Conway, SC; Michael Baldwin and wife, Melva of Newland, NC; Regina Jones and Melvin of Beech Mtn., NC: Renetta Baldwin (deceased) of the home; Ronnie Baldwin (deceased) and wife, Sherry (deceased) of Lenoir, NC and Lisa Alexander and husband, Kenneth of Mocksville, NC. She will be missed dearly by her grandchildren: Greg Baldwin (Denise), Kevin Jones (Carol), Jill Hogan (Trey), Vicky Bowe (Jim), Samantha Wilcox, Matthew Baldwin, Nancy Ceratt (Nathan), Timothy Alexander and Ashley Alexander. And her great grandchildren Laurel (Jay), Delaney, Brinley, Brooke, Caleb, Carter, Nate, Hunter, Lucas, Jaidyn, Dawson (Hannah), Zachery (Hannah), and Hunter Shumate, along with 2 great-great grandsons: Holton and Rylen.
She was the youngest of 15 children born to Miles and Flora Fields of Buck Mountain, NC. She loved her family dearly, grieving as each one went before her and many of her nieces and nephews. As she once said, it is hard to outlive your entire family. But, those nieces and nephew who have survived her: Kay Hogan, Brenda McKinney, Evalina Harmon and Jerry Hicks, have continuously supported her with prayer, visits, and love. This has meant so much to “Mom” throughout the years!
The family received friends Sunday, May 1, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ, Newland, NC. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. at the church, with Brother Dave Atkins and Brother Bryan Miller officiating. Interment followed at the Church of Jesus Christ Cemetery.

Anna was a member of Pine Grove and Mt. Zion United Methodist Churches. Sunday was her favorite day of the week because it was church day. She wrote poetry, even winning prizes and having a poem published. She wrote and sang songs, played the guitar and loved to crochet. She made bedspreads, angels and even made dresses to resemble outfits worn in her favorite movie "Gone With The Wind."

She was completely blind as a little girl for two years, then legally blind until the Lions Club paid for her to have a cornea transplant at Baptist Hospital when she was in her 50's. She was thrilled to see patterns on her wall paper and lips move on T.V. shows. Her favorite thing to do was ride and look at the mountains since she could never get her driver's license. She would always say, "It's a beautiful day," even if it was pouring the rain. She appreciated her sight so much, it made it so much sadder to see her lose that sight again in an accident when she was 88. She was able to take several trips with her husband, Glenn, and other family members, including an airplane flight. She was proud to achieve her GED while her daughter, Glenda, taught classes for it. She had quit high school in 11th grade because losing the two years when she was blind put her behind others in age. She was an inspiration for many (taking several into her home to care for). She will now know "How Beautiful Heaven Must Be," her favorite song, and join her beloved husband, Glenn.

A celebration of her life was held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 14, in Pine Grove United Methodist Church. Linda Taylor and Rev. John Howard officiated. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

988 Anne Elizabeth "Lib" Whiteaker Durham died on August 25, 2015 at the Bristol Regional Hospital. She was born on November 8, 1911 in Abingdon, Virginia, the daughter of Charles Alexander Whiteaker and Ollie Armstead Riddle. She married Charlie Durham in May 1941 and they did not have any children, but she had many nieces, nephews and grand-kin who loved to call her Aunt Lib.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Charlie in 1971, six brothers and three sisters. Survivors on her Whiteaker side include several nieces and nephews, Dorothy DeLoach from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, Jerry Donald Whiteaker, Austin, Texas, Frankie Gene Whiteaker and Martha Ann Whiteaker Kessee, Abingdon, Virginia, and Charles Franklin Whiteaker, Bristol, Virginia. On Charlie's side of the family there are 7 surviving nieces and nephews, 1 brother in law and 27 + grand-kin.

All her life, Lib was firm in her convictions; she was a strong competitor - enjoyed games both physical and mental. Solving puzzles was fun, not work. Lib always wore a smile and had a bright outlook upon life, which may account for her longevity. She enjoyed working in her garden, traveling, and being with people. Lib was a hard working, loving, caring woman who had talent and a particular affinity for young children. Kim Duff Redden and the Odell girls experienced that loving care during family crises. She lived by herself in her home, and up until she was 100 years old, she cleaned her house and cooked all of her meals. Late in life, she usually made enough dinner to share with her next door neighbor Jim Odell. A testament to her knowledge and cooking ability was made by the Rev. Donald Young of Russell, Kentucky at a Duff family Christmas gathering when he stated every year, "That is the smoothest, best tasting Egg Nog that I have ever drank". Lib was blessed with an excellent memory, and could tell you the birthdays for all of her relatives. She was as sharp as a tack even in her old age.

999 Annis Presswood Sherrard, 95, of Port Deposit, Maryland, passed away on May 21, 2022 from natural causes.

Annis had been a resident of the Woodlawn area of Port Deposit, since 1947. She was born in Linville, NC, where she resided until 1944, when she graduated from Newland High School.

Following graduation, she joined the Cadet Nurse Corp, which had been enacted in 1943, during the Franklin Roosevelt administration, to help compensate for the nursing shortage on the home front during World War II. As part of the Cadet program, she traveled to Baltimore to work in pediatric affiliation at the University of Maryland.

During her affiliation in Baltimore, Annis was introduced to her late husband, Warwick C. Sherrard. They married in 1947, and, after graduation, the couple took up residence in Cecil County. Prior to the birth of their only child, Annis performed in-home care for various local families. Later, she worked at Harford Memorial Hospital, before taking a position at Perry Point Veterans Hospital, where she spent 17 years. Her husband, Warwick, started AA&W Mobile Home Sales in Perryville in 1965, and Annis left nursing to participate in the building of the business which they operated together until his death in 1999.

Annis loved gardening, raising crops that bore more resemblance to a truck farm than a single family vegetable garden. She loved to can all that she raised, keeping the Ball Jar company in business. She never missed an opportunity to make jelly, spending hours picking strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, etc. She was an accomplished seamstress and loved to knit and crochet.

As you can see, her home hours were full of projects but her favorite pastime by far was travel. She loved traveling, especially cruising. She and Warwick saw the world from Rio de Janeiro to Alaska and most of it in between. It was a good life.

She is survived by her sister, Margaret Hamlin, of Linville Falls, NC; daughter, Ann Jackson, of North East, MD; grandson, Donald W. Jackson, his wife, Carrissa, and children, Colby and Gino, of Perryville, MD; grandson, Victor R. Jackson, his wife, Miyuki, and son, Kai, of Wilmington, DE; grandson, Rhett L. Jackson, his wife, Heather, and children, Annabelle, Gabe, Ethan, and Blaine, of Mechanicsville, MD; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank all of those that were involved with the long term care of their loved one. Special thank you to: Amedysis Hospice Care and all of the wonderful nurses and aids that assisted with her daily care and final passing; Carissa, who was always available for support, advice, and hands-on care; Carla, who pulled night duty support and respite relief; Michele, who was so attentive and skilled at all tasks; Gina, who responded on a minute’s notice; Rising Sun Fire Company Paramedics; Home Health Medical Supplies of Elkton; Sunshine Girls of Moore’s Chapel; Annie, who was always willing to help in any way; Melinda, who lovingly gave her time to support family needs; and the many other friends that offered prayer and support.

Private services will be held at Lee A. Patterson & Son Funeral Home, P.A., Perryville, Md. A graveside service will be held Friday, May 27, 2022, 11:30 a.m., at Hopewell Cemetery, Port Deposit, Md.
