| 9002 | William Howard Greenwell, 55, of Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, September 11, 2018, at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Howard and Anna Catherine Mann Greenwell. William attended Hampton High School and was a retired supervisor at McCloud Lumber, Hampton. He was a member of East Fairview Free Will Baptist Church. Survivors include the mother of his children, Nancy Greenwell; two children, Sarah Greenwell and Aaron Bailey; three grandchildren, Katelin Teague, James Bailey and Emily Bailey; four sisters and five brothers; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for William Howard Greenwell will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 15, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Charlie Trivette officiating. Interment will follow in the Deloach Cemetery. | 9004 | William Kevin Hampton, lovingly known as “Catbird,” 50, of Butler, TN passed away on January 14, 2022 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Kevin was currently a teacher in the Johnson County School System where he was also a graduate in 1989. Kevin was the proud father of two boys, Blade and Gage Hampton, who he loved watching play sports through the years. Along with spending time with his boys, Kevin loved his time on Watauga Lake where he could be found fishing at any time day or night. He was also an avid University of Tennessee football fan, always wearing the orange and white. Kevin most of all was a big time family man, and he had a great compassion for kids. Kevin was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, J.E. and Mary Kate Arnold, his paternal grandmother, Kate Hampton Hicks, and his companion, Bledsoe Jax. Kevin is survived by his parents, Herb and DeEtte Hampton; his boys, Blade and Gage Hampton and their mother, Jodi Hampton; his sister, Liza Sykes; his aunts, Phyllis Matherly and husband Mack, Burnadene Blevins and husband Mark, Lesa Brown and husband Tim; and his beloved cousins whom he referred to as “Cuz.” He is also survived by his girlfriend, Krissy Walters and her daughter, Ariel and last but certainly not least, his many special friends who are too numerous to list. The family would like to thank everyone for the prayers, concern, and support throughout Kevin’s sickness. A special thank you to Blake Grindstaff for all your help. One of these was named Hutton who was later killed by Indians. William & Martha lived on Buffalo Creek until 1790 when his brothers Nehemiah & Simon were killed by Indians. | 9006 | William Leon "Bill" Gragg, age 64, of 119 Valley High Lane, Blowing Rock, died November 9, 2014. He was born February 23, 1950 in Avery County. He was a home builder and a member of The Church of Jesus in Linville, North Carolina. Bill is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ruby South Gragg of the home; his son, David Charles Gragg and fiancée Donna Shaw of Beauville, North Carolina; his daughter, Ruby Kathleen Harrison and Dwayne Harrison of Blowing Rock; a daughter-in-law, Robyn Latham Gragg of Boone; three brothers, Wayne Gragg and wife Francis of Boomer, Eugene Gragg and wife Ada of Avery County, and Charles Gragg of Boomer, and one sister, Carolyn Gragg of Boomer. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Heather Boone and husband Bobby of Boone, Gary "Lee" Gragg, Jr. of Blowing Rock, DeRhonda Pearson and Elaina Killiam, both of Fleetwood, James Gragg of Fleetwood, William Harrison and Piper Harrison, both of Blowing Rock, and four great-grandchildren, Maura Gragg Moretz, Briana Boone, Tara Boone, and Lana Pearson. | 9007 | William Lish Edney, age 95, of Erwin, passed away on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at the Erwin Health Care Center. Mr. Edney was a native of Unicoi County and a son of the late Robert and Nancy Edney. He was a Laborer for Clinchfield Railroad until his retirement, after thirty one years of service. Mr. Edney was a member of Erwin Pentecostal Holiness Church. He served in the United States Army. Other than his parents Lish is preceded in death by one son, David Lee "Toby" Edney, brothers, Harrison, Conley, Elmer, and V.E. Edney, and sisters, Myrtle White, Nola Hardin, and Gladys Edney. Mr. Edney is survived by: Wife of 71 years: Mildred Gertrude Hensley Edney of Erwin; Sons: Jimmy Edney and wife, Pat of Erwin, Charles "Chuck" Edney and wife, Gloria of Raleigh, NC, Terry "Butch" Edney of Erwin, Michael Edney and wife, Kathy of Erwin; Daughters: Mary Doty of Erwin, Marie Keller of Fort Oglethorpe, GA; Numerous Grandchildren & Great Grandchildren; and Brothers: Bobby Edney of Greeneville, R.L. | 9008 | William Lloyd Wilson, Sr., 89, of Avondale, passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2019 at Twin Pines Health Care Center, West Grove. He was the husband of Janice Marie Greer Wilson with whom he shared 48 years of marriage. Born in Mt. City, TN he was the son of the late Alfred and Lola Belle Eggers Wilson. William was a veteran of the US Marine Corps serving in Korean War. William was Baptist by faith. He was a self-employed truck driver delivering hay and straw to the local horse farms and was also retired from Hudson Farms in West Grove. He enjoyed taking care of his yard, working on cars and trucks and spending time with his family and pets. He is survived by his wife; one son, William Lloyd Miles of AZ; one daughter, Judith Casanta (Leonard) of West Grove; four step-children, Jerry Ricky Price (Sue) of New London, Linda Pastorius (Bob) of West Grove, Edward Price (Sally Mull) of Rising Sun, MD and Christine Rickabaugh (Paul) of Cochranville; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; twelve step-great-grandchildren; and five siblings, Boyd Wilson of Mt. City, TN, Stacey Wilson of Nottingham, Nell Greer of Toughkenamon, Curtis Greer of Quarryville and Gordon Wilson of London Grove. | 9009 | William M. "Bill" Carden, 96, 470 Blue Springs Rd., Elizabethton, died Wednesday, December 29, 2004 in the Life Care Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Richard and Emma Carden. Mr. Carden was a retired employee of the Bemberg Corporation having worked there for 43 years. He was a member of the First Church of God. Mr. Carden was preceded in death by his first wife, Monnie Williams Carden and his second wife, Myrtle C. Carden; four brothers and three sisters. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Harley and Marcelline Carden, Elizabethton; a grandson and his wife, Dalerick and Cathy Carden, Atlanta, Ga.; two great-granddaughters, Courtney and Caroline Carden; a brother, Ruben Carden, Elizabethton, and several nieces and nephews. | 9010 | William M. "Merle" Grindstaff, 90, joined the Heavenly Host on February 13, 2017 after an extended illness. Born February 8, 1927 he was the only son of William Rosco and Corda Greenlee Grindstaff. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Garnett Moody. Survivors include two sisters, Barbara Jean Hobson and Patricia Crowder, both of Johnson City, niece Beverly Britton, seven nephews Mike Grindstaff, Roswell, Marvin and Travis Moody, Steve, Jeff and David Crowder, special care giver Helen "Dixie" Grindstaff and several great nieces and nephews. Merle was a lifelong member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church, he was a charter member of the Central Volunteer Fire Department and after 44 years he retired from North American Rayon Corporation. Having grown up during the Great Depression and serving in the US Army during WWII, he saw the hard and difficult times of his generation, from which his ethic for hard work and penchant for savings was developed. He grew up working on the farm; gardening and caring for the horses that tended the land alongside him. In spirit of sharing, he enjoyed giving most of the crops of his garden to those in the Central community. Merle enjoyed spending time and sharing stories with his special friends…Larry Honeycutt, Pat Smith, Frankie Williams, Roman Holtsclaw, Norman Rowe, Roger Banks, Roy Gene Bailey, Bill Carter, Mike Depriest, Jerry Pearman, Gene Graybeal and many others. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 17, 2017 at Morris-Baker Funeral Home from 12:00pm until 1:30pm with a memorial service at 1:30pm in the Oak Chapel under the direction Rev. A retired carpenter, Mr. Luttrell was the son of the late Samuel S. and Cindia Phillips Luttrell. He was a member of First Christian Church, Jonesboro. His son died in February and his wife died in April of this year. Mr. Scalf was 72 years of age and had been a life long resident of this city. He was a member of the East Side Baptist Church. He was Manager of the V.F.W. Cafeteria for a number of years and was a former employee of the Bemberg Corporation. He was of the Baptist Faith. Mr. Estep served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Elizabeth Grindstaff Estep; three sisters: Hildred Peaks, Edith Estep and Lynnis Lyons; and two brothers: Hasford Estep and Warren Estep. | 9014 | William Morefield - MOUNTAIN CITY MOUNTAIN CITY — Mr. William Carroll Morefield, age 86, of 919 Medical Park Drive, and formerly of Hamby Lane, Mountain City, died Sunday morning, August 22, 2004, at Mountain City Care Center Born in Johnson County Nov. 3, 1917, he was a son of the late William Webster and Margaret Furches Morefield. Mr. Morefield was a farmer and had worked as a night watchman at Blue Ridge Shoe. William was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and was a former Sunday school teacher. Surviving are: one daughter, Anita Bentley and husband Rev. David Bentley; two sons, Howard Morefield and wife Linda, and Jerry Morefield and wife Paulette, all of Mountain City; one brother, Jasper Morefield of Mountain City; three sisters, Opal Dunn and Anna Mae Hackney, both of Mountain City, and Helen Morefield of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren, Donna Fritts, Danny and Brian Morefield, and Josh Bentley, all of Mountain City; and five great-grandchildren, Brooke Hutchinson, Alex Morefield, Samantha Morefield, Tyler Morefield and Makala Fritts. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Miller Morefield, one brother, Charles Morefield, one sister, Naomi Wallace, and one grandson, Eric Morefield. Funeral services for Mr. William Carroll Morefield will be conducted Monday evening at 8 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. James Norman and Rev. David Bentley. | 9015 | William Reaves Clark, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at the young age of 96. Mr. Clark was born July 28, 1926, in Knob Creek Community, Johnson City, Tenn. He was the son of the late John Bowman Clark Jr. and Grace Thornburg Clark. He was also preceded in death by his wife of over 30 years, Goldie Hyder Wallace Clark; brothers, Maynard Clark (Ruby)) and Ollen Clark (Virginia), sister, Betty Sue Clark Fulkerson (Ralph), and stepdaughter, Donnie Murphy (Bob). William R. Clark served in World War II, Armored Tank Division from 1944 through 1948, and was promoted to Sergeant 8/2/1948. He served as an Interior guard at the Palace of Justice (Nuremberg Trials), and the International Military Tribunal Prison, Nuremberg, Germany. Mr. Clark graduated Daniel Boone High School, Gray, Tenn., and Tampa Business College (Tampa, Fla.). He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Elizabethton, Tenn. Mr. Clark retired after 34 years of service from the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad; later renamed CSX Railroad. He loved gardening, bicycling, cooking, long strolls, yard saling, but most of all, he loved his family and friends! Survivors include: sister, Dorothy J. | 9016 | William Riley "Casey" Ward, 91, of Mocksville, NC died on Sunday, June 7, 2015, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. A native of Watauga County, he was the son of the late John Wesley Ward and Mary Ann Presnell Ward and the widower of the late Finnie Presnell Ward who died January 25, 2005. They shared more than sixty years of marriage. Mr. Ward was a World War II Veteran of the United States Army. He was a retired county maintenance worker and a member of Heaven Bound Full Gospel Church. Survivors include four sons, two daughters, two brothers, 13 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 12th, at Heaven Bound Full Gospel Church. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the time of service. | 9017 | William Robert “Rob” Whitehead, 78, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, July 24, 2022, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Rob was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. He was a son of the late Luther and Elsie Street Whitehead. Rob was a mechanic and was owner of Whitehead Garage for 25 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Tina Whitehead, and several brothers and sisters. Survivors include two sons, Joe and Michael Whitehead; one daughter, Jennifer Whitehead; several grandchildren, Billy Ellis, Nikki Whitehead, Brandon Whitehead, Bobby Ritchie and Gallerie Andrews, along with several great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jessie Caldwell; sisters, Ruth Anderson, Loulabell Dempsky, Linda Caldwell, Brenda Caldwell, Virginia Caldwell; brothers, Edwin Caldwell and David Caldwell. Roger enjoyed the mountains and loved hunting and fishing. | 9019 | William Staple (Bill) Collins Jr. of Conway, S.C., and formerly of Boone, passed away Saturday, July 17, 2010. Mr. Collins, the son of Edna Moody Collins and Staple Collins, was born in Watauga County Oct. 30, 1937. He attended Appalachian High School in Boone and graduated from Blowing Rock High School in Blowing Rock. After graduation, he attended Nashville Auto Diesel College in Nashville, Tenn. During the 1950s and '60s, Bill and his dad owned and operated Collins' Truck and Auto Service in Boone. Mr. Collins moved to Myrtle Beach in the mid-60s and was involved in various civic organizations; he loved the small town feel of Myrtle Beach because it reminded him of his hometown. During a long career in the automobile business, he was associated with Clark Motors, Holcomb Motors, Watts Appraisal Service, Bob Bible Pontiac, Beck Ford, and Hadwin White. His hobby and chosen career was automobiles, and he enjoyed collecting classic cars, especially Corvettes. He was the owner/operator of Collins' Auto Sales in the Willow Springs community. Mr. Collins is survived by his son, William Staple "Chip" Collins III of Conway, S.C., and Chip's mother, Mary Carroll Moore of Myrtle Beach; his sister, Sharon Collins (Bill) Dowdy of Paisley, Fla.; three granddaughters, Brittany Elizabeth, Sarah Madison and Mary Kathryn Collins of Conway; three nieces, Judy (David) Hamlett of Boone, Betsy (Chris) Stamey of Jacksonville, Fla., and Keni Lee (Chris) Neverton of Paisley, Fla.; and a special lady, Diana Elvis Collins of Conway. | 9020 | William Waightstill Avery, Jr., 79, of U.S. 19-E, the Plumtree community, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at U.N.C. Health Care – Blue Ridge in Morganton. Born on May 1, 1943 in Avery County, he was son of the late William Waightstill Avery, Sr. and Lotus Vance Avery. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sisters: Kim Avery, Patsy Vance and Janice Wise, and his brother: Judge Avery. Waightstill was a member of the Buck Hill Presbyterian Church. He was a graduate of both N.C. State University and Lees-McRae College. He was the owner of Avery Farms and loved farming a variety of things each year. Christmas trees were where it all started. His home was always open and he had a giving heart to all. Christ-like love exuded from him through his willingness to serve others. We are a very blessed family to call him "Dad," "Dada," and "Big Waightstill." Betty was a charter member of Grace Baptist Church and she continued to worship there until recent months. She retired from York County Public Schools where she served for many years as a kindergarten aid at Magruder and Waller Mill Schools. Betty’s passion in life was raising her five children as Christians and, along with her husband, providing a stable, loving family home. Later, grandchildren became another passion. Betty was always there to assist with taking her grandchildren to school, Fife & Drum practice, having “cousin sleepovers,” singing old-time songs, and preparing holiday meals. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Kyte; parents, Taft and Grace Bradshaw Campbell; sisters, Mary Evelyn Taylor, Georgia Berry and Carolyn Richards; brothers, Bruce Campbell and Bobby Campbell; grandson, Adam Kyte; and daughter-in-law, Philippia “Happy” Hull Kyte. | 9028 | Willie D. Hammons, age 75, left this life and entered his heavenly home on Monday, October 8, 2018. He was born on October 4, 1943, the son of the late Ernest and Edith Hammons of the Forge Creek Community. Those left to cherish his memories include his loving wife of 51 years, Naomi Blevins Hammons, their son, Alan Hammons and wife Sonya, and their daughter Rebecca Dietrich and husband Marc; siblings, Jean Chappell, Lynn Hammons and wife Sue, and Larry Hammons and wife Sharon; six wonderful grandchildren whom he cherished dearly, Michael Kirby, Austin Norris, Alison Dietrich, Ethan Dietrich, Oren Hammons and Eli Hammons and many nieces and nephews on both the Hammons and Blevins side of the family. After graduating from ETSU in 1969, Willie worked in the Johnson County School System for 37 years as a teacher and Director of the Vocational Program. He had a vision to enhance the construction program by purchasing property on which to build and sell homes. He worked diligently to establish this successful program before his retirement in 2006. Willie spent his retirement years farming and raising cattle. He worked passionately and had a successful Braunvieh cattle farm with his son, Alan. Willie served his community well. He was a lifelong member and Elder of Hammons Chapel Christian Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years. He loved serving the Lord in any way he could. He recently took on the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors of Doe Mountain Recreation Authority. He had a desire to allow people to enjoy the beauty of Johnson County through the responsible development of Doe Mountain. Willie enjoyed spending time with friends and family and enjoying life. He was a member of The Young at Heart Square Dance Club for many years. He also enjoyed going to the Senior Center and visiting with his friends. After retirement, Willie and Naomi traveled to several different countries and much of the United States including Alaska and the US Virgin Islands. They especially enjoyed visiting Israel and Austria. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Johnson County Senior Center or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Colbaugh, on September 27, 2010, and three sisters, Margaret Williams, Evelyn Oaks and Jean Donahue. Wilma retired as a sales clerk from Watson's Department Store and was a member of Borderview Christian Church, where she sang in the choir for over 50 years. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, being with her family and her pet cat, "Tommy." Wilma was a devoted member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church where she led the choir for more than thirty years. Even after her declining health kept her from attending regularly, she always kept up with what was going on, and would always ask, "What did they sing today?" She was so proud of all her "children" in the choir! Wilma was also known for her ability to recall events and for her hilarious stories. She was also known for her special "sayings" and advice. Wilma loved her church and she loved her family with all her heart and often spoke of both with pride. Wilma was the daughter of the late Clyde and Anzo Deyton Engle. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers: Harvey, Leslie and Ed; one sister-in-law, Jeanette; father and mother-in-law, Andy and Pearl Bradford; two brothers-in-law: Doug and Terry Bradford; one nephew, Shaun Bradford. She found her heart's joy volunteering to keep the Nursery and teach Sunday School at Pine Grove United Methodist Church for decades. Wilma loved to cook, bake, can, and spoil children, continuing to do so up until last week. Among those welcoming Wilma into heaven were her parents; sister, Ruth G. Houston; husband, Sam L. She was a member of Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arvil Lee Cole, and two sons, Larry P. Cole Sr. and Charles H. Culbert. Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Kay Bryant; a sister, Frankie C. Wilma was born in Carter County to the late William and Edith (Troutman) Street. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, David Henry Blackwell. Wilma retired from Elizabethton Glass Company and had previously worked at East Tennessee Mills. She attended Burbank Free Will Baptist Church and was a loving woman who would rather give than to receive. She loved spending time with her grandson, Cole. Wilma was an excellent cook and was always smiling. She enjoyed shopping and traveling. Left to cherish her memory include her son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Tabitha Blackwell, and a grandson, Cole Blackwell, all of Elizabethton. Several brothers and sisters also survive. Wilton was born February 6, 1928 in Johnson County, Tennessee, a son of the late Marvin Daniel Potter and Ivalee Miller Potter. He was a retired superintendent for Beaman Corporation and served in the United States Army. Wilton was a member of Zionville Baptist Church, where he served as superintendent for 10 years and enjoyed singing in the choir. Wilton is survived by his wife, Sally Faye Wilson Potter of the home; three sisters, Bernice Reece of Trade, Tennessee, Helen Pardue, and Louise Pardue and husband Jimmy, all of Mountain City, Tennessee; one brother, Luther Martin of Beckley, West Virginia; two sisters-in-law, Georgia Pardue and husband Edgar of Zionville, and Irene Potter of Trade, and one brother-in-law, Clay Wilson of Zionville. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherry Potter; one brother, Bruce Potter; one step-granddaughter, Arwen Burns, and one sister-in-law, Lola Martin. Funeral services for Wilton F. Potter will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, October 24, 2017, at 2:00 o'clock, at Zionville Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, from 12:00 until 2:00 o'clock. Born on June 17, 1921, in Senia community of Avery County, she was the daughter of the late Mackie Hughy and Maude McKinney McCoury. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her Husband: Frank Jones who passed away in 2010. Also preceding her in death was her Son: John Frank Jones; her Daughter: Sharon Jones Sronce; her Sisters: Bernice Woods and Jennie McCoury; and her Brothers: Zelian, Lonnie, Frank, Carson, and Johnny McCoury. Winnie was a faithful member of the McCoury Rock Freewill Baptist Church. She retired from Hampshire Hosiery of Spruce Pine and then worked with the Avery County C.A.P. program for 18 years. Winnie enjoyed singing gospel music at churches, working in her garden, and sewing. She also enjoyed visiting people and loved her grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. He was born on September 9, 1940 in Avery County to the late Truman and Erleen McGuire Church. Winston was a member of Beech Mountain Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing and traveling in his spare time and loved working as a taxidermist as well as immensely enjoying being outdoors. He loved animals and all of nature. Winston worked on Grandfather Mountain over a span of 40 years. His duties included gift shop manager as well as assisting Mr. Hugh Morton, owner of Grandfather Mountain, with various duties which included helping with getting pictures of Mildred the Bear and other animals in the habitat. Winston also enjoyed spending time with his family. Those he left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Carolyn Church of the home; son, Bradley Church of Deep Gap; step-daughters, Donna (Jerry) Bare of West Jefferson and Pam Davis of Fleetwood; grandsons, Nathan (Becca) Cheek of Fleetwood and Josh Bare of West Jefferson; great granddaughters, Kendra and Kylie Cheek of Fleetwood; brothers, Hansel (Doris) Church of Canton, GA and Curtis Church of Elk Park; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services for Winston will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at Beech Mountain Baptist Church. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Newland, NC.
