8851 | WARNER ROBINS - Joyce Ann Amos peacefully passed away early on the morning of Friday, February 19, 2021, at the age of 78. The daughter of the late Earnest and Carrie Hicks, Joyce was born on October 29, 1942, in Gray, Tennessee. She was a proud military wife and with her husband, they moved around often. She worked in quality control at Frito-Lay for 17 years before becoming a Church Secretary at the Cochran Field Church of God. Joyce was of the Pentecostal faith. She had a green thumb and enjoyed cultivating many types of flowers. She was also a talented singer. All will miss Joyce dearly as she imprinted on the lives of many during her time here on earth. In addition to her parents, her son, Stephen Amos and her daughter, Sandra Amos, preceded Joyce in death. Her legacy will live on through her husband of 61 years, William “Bill” Amos; son, William Bill Amos, Jr. (Deb) of Colorado; daughter-in-law, Gaye (McCullough) Harris of Centerville; grandchildren, Christopher Amos (Sylvia) of Texas; Kayla Crow of Indiana; Clayton Amos of Missouri; Ashley Poole of Statesboro; and Alyssa Simpson and Amanda Simpson, both of Tennessee. A visitation will be held Monday, February 22, 2021, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service celebrating Joyce’s life will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. 8852 | Warren G. Estep, Sr., age 80, , Hampton, TN died Saturday, March 1, 2003 in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Henry & Bertie Scalf Estep. Mr. Estep was a retired painter with Grandfather Mountain Incorporated. He was an avid fisherman and had received the pioneer award for co-founding the Hampton Bass Club. Mr. Estep was a U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II. He is preceded in death by an infant brother, three sisters: Lenice "Sweetie" Lyons, Edith Estep & Hildred Peeks; two grandsons: Gary Lynn Elliott & Timothy Michael White. Survivors include his wife, of 57 years, Esther Guinn Estep, of the home; four daughters & sons-in-law: Elizabeth & David Baldwin, Fayetteville, NC, Barbara & Donnie Elliott, Elizabethton, Sherry Estep & Mike White, Elizabethton, Patricia & J.R. 8862 | WASHINGTON COUNTY -Mrs. Barbara Keplinger Elliott, age 78, of Washington County, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, August 7, 2021, at the Johnson City Medical Center. Mrs. Elliott was born in Johnson City to the late Arthur Willis and Mildred Bolton Keplinger. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Mitchell Bennett. Barbara was of the Christian faith and loved the Lord. She was a great wife, mom, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved bluegrass music and enjoyed playing the fiddle and piano. As a young girl she enjoyed playing the bass fiddle with her family. She was also an amazing cook who enjoyed cooking for her family. She retired from the ASCS office after serving the farmers of Washington and Unicoi counties for 37 years. After taking some time off to be with her family, she decided to go back to work for the Washington County Property Assessor’s Office where she recently retired. She is survived by her husband and love of her life of almost 60 years, Glen Elliott. They loved spending time together especially taking weekend road trips. They enjoyed finding collectibles and antiques together. Other survivors include her three daughters and sons-in-law, Penny and Mike Lowe, Lisa Bennett, Ouita and Chris Lands; grandchildren, Elliott Lowe, Hunter Lowe, Alex Lowe, Kauli Lowe, Josh Bennett (Elizabeth), Jordan Bennett (Casey), Savannah Lands and Ella Lands; great-grandchildren Brayleigh, Raylan, Liliana and Colton; two brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Linda Keplinger, Wayne and Jean Keplinger; and several nieces and nephews. She was born November 15, 1929 in Watauga to the late Charlie F. & Lillie Mottern Smith. Betty was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. In earlier years she was employed at King’s Department Store, Johnson City and retired from Watsons Department Store. Betty was the oldest member of Oak Street Baptist Church having been a member for the past seventy-four years. She served as Sunday School Teacher, Training Union Teacher, Children’s Bible Drill, VBS Worker and Librarian. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James Lowell Isaacs who passed away July 5, 1995 and by four sisters and one brother. Survivors include her children; Ann (Jim) Caldwell, Elaine (Randall) Jenkins, Thomas (Karen) Isaacs and Todd Isaacs. 8865 | WATAUGA - Florence Heaton, 78, Watauga, went to Heaven to meet her Lord and Savior, on Monday, May 23, 2022, at her home, following a courageous battle with cancer. Florence was a native of Black Wolfe, WV, and been a resident here for most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Samuel Jonathan and Dora Mae Duncan Feathers. Florence worked several years as a Scrub Nurse in Labor and Delivery at the Johnson City Memorial Hospital and Johnson City Medical Center, retiring in 1990. She was an active member of Pleasant Hill Church of the Brethren, where she loved her church family. Florence loved gardening, and especially enjoyed her flowers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rondall Hugo Heaton, Sr. in 2014, a brother, Arthur Feathers, and an infant sister, Rebecca Ellen Feathers. Florence is survived by two daughters, Theresa Pickle and husband Ivan, Johnson City, Deanna Heaton, Piney Flats; two sons, Rondall H. He had worked for Interstate Foundry and retired from O.G. Kelly Machine Company. Herbert was a veteran having served his country in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed gardening, singing and playing music, fishing, reading, travelling with his wife, Ann, and spending time with his daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved the Lord with all his heart. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Darrell Greer; his brothers, Glenn, Orvil, Tom, Butler, Richard Truett and Harry Greer; his sisters, Mary Greer, Gladys Blackburn, Irene Greer and Trula Mae Greer. He was born March 19, 1936, in Elizabethton to the late Hugh and Carrie Blevins Sams. He served in the United States Air Force. Jerry had lived in Florida for 29 years before returning to Carter County. He retired from the Maintenance Department at Sears. He was a member of Southside Christian Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Betty Sams and six siblings: Helen Rachel, Jack Sams, F.D. Sams, Noland Sams, Danny Sams and Phyllis Sams. Survivors include a daughter: Barbara Buchanan, Johnson City, two sons: Terry Sams and Donny (Linda) Sams. Four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Larry was born in Elizabethton, a son of the late Guy and Helen Russell Treadway. In addition to his parents, Larry was also preceded in death by his daughter, Julie Reece; and two sisters, Doris Treadway and Sue Adams. Larry retired from the butcher department at Food City and enjoyed fishing, hunting, working in his yard but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and especially his beloved grandchildren. Those left to cherish Larry's memory include his wife, Donna Shipley Treadway of the home; his son, Brandon and wife Gen of Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Gage Treadway, Caiden Treadway and Mason Treadway all of Elizabethton, Autumn Reynolds of Lebanon, VA and Jimmy Junior Reece of Elizabethton; four great grandchildren, Aiden Reynolds, Isabella Reynolds, Gabe Reynolds and Willow Reynolds all of Lebanon, VA; two sisters, Cathy Kent and Teresa Ballard and husband Ray all of Elizabethton; his brother, Tommy Treadway of Elizabethton; a special niece, Penny Sams and husband Johnny of Elizabethton; and several other nieces and nephews survive. 8870 | WATAUGA - Larry Roger Hammons, 80, Watauga, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2022, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital, Elizabethton, TN, following an extended illness. Larry was born in Carter County to the late Fred and Geneva Campbell Hammons. Larry graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1960. He continued his education at Milligan College. Then he went on to proudly serve in the United States Air Force. Next, Larry worked for Hoffmann Aircraft and then Sunshine biscuits, Inc in Lenexa, KS. In June of 1969, Larry met the love of his life, Linda, at Watauga Christian Church. On August 15, 1970, Larry and Linda were married and began a very blessed life together. Life brought Larry and Linda to central Illinois, where he worked for Swift and Co. Larry attended Johnson University (Bible College) graduating in 1975. He pastored and preached in Mississippi, South Carolina, Illinois and Tennessee. He loved to tell everyone that the Lord loved them. Larry worked several positions before going to work for the City of Elizabethton as quality control for the water department. He retired in 2004 after 13 years. In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by: one infant brother; one cousin, Robert Campbell; one sister-in-law, Nilah Groves Mills; and one brother-in-law, Charles Brubaker. Survivors include: his wife of 51 years, Linda Lee Hammons; two sons, Roger Hammons and his wife Sarah and Daniel Hammons and his wife Stephanie; two grandchildren, Alexis Norris and her husband Justin, and Chesnee Hammons; two great grandchildren, Knox and Nash; one sister, Gail Brubaker; nieces and nephews, Chris Brubaker and his wife Carrie, Michael Brubaker and his wife Jennifer, Sarah Woods and her husband Ben and nine great nieces and nephews; niece, Jennifer Schmale, and sons, Abe Schmale and his wife Hannah and Jacob Schmale; special cousins, Jana Lisa Hicks and her husband Dennis, Kristen Campbell and son Gabe , Kendra Hicks, Joey Campbell and his wife Paula and Jeffrey Campbell. Randy loved working with wood, was a NASCAR Fan and an avid UT Vol Fan. He was preceded in death by his father: Worley Hyder in 1998 and his father-in-law: Kyle Hyder. 8872 | WATAUGA - Mildred Mottern Young, age 97, 181 Cripple Creek Loop, Watauga, Tennessee, died Friday, July 1, 2022 and is now in her heavenly home, celebrating with family and friends. When her size 4 ½ feet hit the ground, they didn’t stop until they went to bed. With a smile and grace, she always gave more in life than she received. Born April 8, 1925, was a 1943 graduate of Happy Valley High School and later business school. She worked as a bookkeeper until she retired from Thomas Industries/ Easy Painter in 1990. Church was always a big part of her life and she was a member of Brick Christian Church. She grew up in the big band era and loved music, especially when it was Elvis Presley singing. Preceded in death by her parents David Ritchie Hyder and Sybil Range Hyder, husbands George F. Mottern and John J. Young, an infant son George Patrick Mottern and son Tim Mottern, an infant great-grandson Preston Davis, her sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Monk Tillman. 8873 | WATAUGA - Mr. Albert Eugene "Gene" Colbaugh, age 86, 356 Cripple Creek Loop, Watauga, TN went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, May 11, 2017 from the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Elizabethton, he was the son of the late Riley Fred and Mary Smith Colbaugh. Mr. Colbaugh retired from North American Rayon Corporation after more than thirty years of service. He was a member of Gap Creek Christian Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn Morris Colbaugh; his second wife, Shirley Colbaugh; a step-son, Danny Carrier; three brothers, Harry Colbaugh, Freddie Colbaugh and Glen Colbaugh and two sisters, Selma Parlier and Evelyn Colbaugh. Those left to cherish his memory include a son, Rick Colbaugh and wife Connie; a daughter, Vickie Colbaugh; a grandson, Grant Colbaugh and wife Amanda; two great-grandchildren, Issac Colbaugh and Will Colbaugh and a brother Herman Colbaugh. 8874 | WATAUGA - Rev. Glenn L. Hoilman, 78, Watauga went home to be with his Lord, Sunday, May 13, 2018 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital after an extended illness. A native of Burnsville, North Carolina, he was a son of the late Millard Filmore & Blonda Grindstaff Hoilman. He was a retired Mechanic. Rev. Hoilman had served as a pastor for over 42 years. He pastored Y Free Will Baptist Church for 30 years. He was a member of True Gospel Baptist Church, Elizabethton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Terry & Edward Hoilman and five sisters: Katie Hoilman, Mary Ann Hoilman, Pansy Richardson, Geneva Dawson and Cathy Sue Smith. Survivors include his wife: Janette West Hoilman, a son & daughter-in-law: Dexter & Tammy Hoilman, Watauga, two daughters & sons-in-law: Connie & Frank Higgins, Elizabethton and Lisa & Donnie Bare, Watauga. Shirley was born in Washington County, Tennessee to the late Claude and Pauline Shelton Jenkins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Rev. Roy Jenkins, Polly Grindstaff, Wayne Jenkins and Carol Lee Jenkins. Shirley had worked in food service and was of the Freewill Baptist faith. She was also a homemaker and enjoyed country music, gardening and cooking. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 49 years, Ray Lawrence Clemons, Sr.; four children, David Clemons, of Elizabethton, Bobby Ward, of Richmond, KY, Ray L. He was a painter for ETSU and retired in 2013. He enjoyed golfing until his health no longer allowed him to play. Steven was a US Army Veteran and served during Vietnam earning a Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Air Medal, US Army Commendation Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge. In addition to his parents, Steven was preceded in death by: four brothers, Terry, Junior, James and Jerry Scalf. 8878 | WATAUGA — Herbert Massengill, age 85, of Watauga, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, from Lifecare Center of Elizabethton, following an extended illness. Herbert was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Jim Ben Massengill and Nellie Shipley Massengill. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Lucy Morris, Oma Jones, Glenna Newton, and Lillie Mae Wampler; and two brothers, Robert Massengill and J.W. Massengill. Herbert retired as a carpenter and was a member of Bunker Hill Christian Church. He loved gardening and sharing his vegetables with his friends. Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Janice Greene and husband James, of Elizabethton and Ruby Humphrey, of Piney Flats; one son, Harold Massengill and wife Cathy, of Watauga; three grandchildren, Jessica Greene and Jennifer Greene, both of Elizabethton, and Joshua Humphrey and wife Ginger, of Piney Flats; three great grandchildren, Ryan Greene, of Elizabethton, Daniel Humphrey and Ethan Humphrey, both of Piney Flats. He enjoyed motorcycles and at a younger age would race his motorcycles. Wayne loved to work and raise his roosters. He always made sure his family was taken care of. He was a native of Poplar, North Carolina and a son of the late John Cooper and Edna Hughes Cooper. Wayne made his home on Spivey Mountain with his family since 1967. He was a wonderful husband, dad, grandpa, brother, brother-in-law and friend. Wayne was a member of Mountain Dale Freewill Baptist Church where he served as Deacon for numerous years. He loved going to church and loved his church family. Wayne enjoyed working around the house, gardening and cutting wood. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: C.J. and Ted Cooper; one sister, Pansy Delffs. Ed was of the Church of Christ faith and attended East Unaka COC in Johnson City as a child. He graduated East Tennessee State University and received a Bachelor's degree in 1973. He had an extensive career in sales and service in several industries. He especially enjoyed buying and selling real estate, but his true passion was in cars. He spent 35 wonderful years with his wife and best friend. Together they enjoyed skiing, being outdoors, traveling, and spending time with loved ones. Even with all the trials that come along with being ill, Ed continued to put his family and friends first. A deep thinker, and true jack of all trades, he loved helping people (and animals) solve whatever problems came their way. Ed was preceded in death by his father, Carriger William (Shag) Stout and mother, Martha Eleanor Hendrix Stout. Wayne was born in Bend, Oregon on December 29, 1950, to Hardin and Myrtle Shelton Snyder. In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his daughter Melanie Billings. Wayne worked in the sawmill most of his life. When Wayne was not working, he enjoyed traveling across the country, which he did many times. He also enjoyed old cars, especially his Buick, and motorcycles. He was the second oldest son born at Grace Hospital in Banner Elk to the late Ernest and Beulah Turbyfill from Blevins Creek. Wayne was married to Loraine Turbyfill where together they owned the Cranberry 76 Service Station before he retired. He was a well-known mechanic and tow-truck driver amongst his other skill sets. He loved drag racing, being around those he loved and talking about times gone by. 8889 | Wayne Wagner Morley is at peace in heaven after living a long life serving his country and caring for his family and his fellow man. Wayne was born in Neeva, TN on August 18, 1926 and lived in Butler, TN until he was drafted into the Army in 1944. After serving time in the Army, Wayne elected to join the Navy in 1948. He married his "Darling" Georgie Mae Potter on October 22nd, 1948, and they were married happily for 68 years. During their lives together they made their home in all four corners of the country, living for a time in Rhode Island, Maine, Florida, Washington, California, Virginia, and returned to Tennessee where he lived from 1971 until the day of his death, July 31st, 2017. Wayne instilled a love of living in his children and grandchildren, grounded in his belief that there was little reason to worry when God was in control. He loved nature and whether he was camping with his family, riding motorcycles around the mountains, or just sitting outside listening to the birds, he was at peace enjoying the beauty around him. Wayne loved his family. He was the proud father of two children, four grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. He is survived by Larry (and his wife Dawn) and Karen (and her husband, Mike); four grandchildren, Lisa, Dana (and her fiancé Robert), Dustin (and his wife, Crystal), and Robert (and his wife, Fran); and proud great-grandfather to Makenzie, Ashley, Sophia, Trinity, Aaron, Seth, and Liam. Nothing made him smile easier than the smiles of his children. He is also survived by his loving younger sister, Pearl Matherly, and his wife, Georgie, who remained in his thoughts until his last days on this earth. Wayne will always be remembered as a kind, caring, honest and thoughtful man who loved to smile, laugh, and tell stories. He never met a stranger, he loved talking to everyone he met and couldn't be pulled away from a lively conversation. He enjoyed whittling and his woodworking kept him quite busy for years. Strangers and family alike can attest to the presence of letter openers, birds and walking sticks that Wayne gifted to them over the years. As a family, we will miss his smile, his laugh, and his company. We were blessed to have him in our lives as long as we did. He loved nature and whether he was camping with his family, riding motorcycles around the mountains, or just sitting outside listening to the birds, he was at peace enjoying the beauty around him. Wayne loved his family. He was the proud father of two children, four grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. He is survived by Larry (and his wife Dawn) and Karen (and her husband, Mike); four grandchildren, Lisa, Dana (and her fiancé Robert), Dustin (and his wife, Crystal), and Robert (and his wife, Fran); and proud great-grandfather to Makenzie, Ashley, Sophia, Trinity, Aaron, Seth, and Liam. Nothing made him smile easier than the smiles of his children. He is also survived by his loving younger sister, Pearl Matherly, and his wife, Georgie, who remained in his thoughts until his last days on this earth. Wayne will always be remembered as a kind, caring, honest and thoughtful man who loved to smile, laugh, and tell stories. He never met a stranger, he loved talking to everyone he met and couldn't be pulled away from a lively conversation. He enjoyed whittling and his woodworking kept him quite busy for years. Strangers and family alike can attest to the presence of letter openers, birds and walking sticks that Wayne gifted to them over the years. As a family, we will miss his smile, his laugh, and his company. We were blessed to have him in our lives as long as we did. 8891 | Waynie Thaxton Bowling Collins, 67, Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord Saturday, December 8, 2012, at her residence. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence "Buddy" & Evelyn Ruth Smith Bowling. She was a retired Certified Nursing Assistant. Waynie was a member of the Roan Street Free Will Baptist Church and was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary. She was also an assistant Leader in the Girl Scouts. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister: Helen Ruth Hopson; and a special friend, the late Freeman "Hoover" Lewis. She was born December 29, 1930 to the late James Williams and Callie Williams. She is also preceded in death by her spouse, Chester Osborne. brother; Joe Williams and 4 sisters; Doll Goode, Emma Wagner, Pauline Greer, and Hallie Dunn Ada enjoyed planting flowers, gardening, reading, and quilting. She would often volunteer in the food pantry of First Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Fleenor and Lottie Norris, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Herrin Norris and R.L. Norris; three sisters: Tressie Holden, Frances Allen, and Lila Norris. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband Harry “HD” Pierce of Butler, TN; two daughters: Lori Anderson of Butler, TN and Vikkie Minton and husband John of Florida; three grandchildren: J.T. 8898 | We are saddened to announce the passing of Carl Duffield, age 88, on Saturday, October 30, 2021 in Johnson City Medical Center. He was born May 20, 1933 to Anna Mae Duffield. Carl was a 1953 graduate of Hampton High School and was a US veteran, He served in US Army in 278 Infantry in Fort Devens, MA with an honorable discharge in 1950 and served in US Coast Guard in Port O’Connor, TX with and honorable discharge in 1954 and also a member of the US National Guard in 1949. In addition to his mother he was preceded in death by his grandparents John R. and Bessie Duffield and two sons-in-law Kenneth Taylor and David Triplett. Carl was a businessman having owned and operated many businesses: floral shop in 1968, a monument shop in 1970, grocery store, Amish Deli and Sub Shop, He served as Johnson County Coroner, Judicial Commissioner (Justice of the Peace 1st Section), Youth Services officer, Mountain City Dispatch and Johnson County Magistrate. Carl received an Associates Degree in Radio & Electronics in 1960, received a diploma in Mechanical Drawing in 1964, a diploma in General Business and received a certificate of Civil Defense in 1979. He attended Betsy Floral School. He was a 64 year member of The Most Worshipful Grand Lodge F & AM (joined in May 1957) 32nd in 1974, Scottish Rite nobles of the Mystic Shrine December 1974 and a Certificate of Charter Membership in July 1976. H was appointed Ambassador for Jericho Shrine Temple in 1980 and in 1982 received recognition for his contribution to the Directors Staff. Danny was a block mason for 35 years and was the owner of Dugger Masonry. He enjoyed working on his classic cars with his brother and riding 4 wheelers but loved spending time with his daughter, Danielle most of all.
