She rented out rooms in her home. Marie says she was such a good cook and a good manager in those hard times of very little money. She served noonday lunches for her boarders and others. Most of the noonday trade were people she had known for a long time who would call and say, "Can you set another place at noon?".

859 ACCUSED OF THE SHOOTING was Henderson Garten, a guerrila under Capt. Philip Thurmond of Oak Hill, and Jefferson (Jeff) Bennett a strong Southern sympathizer. This all came on March 2nd as we buried Boude Bennett in the Bennett graveyard several miles back of Jumping Branch. A kinsman of Jeffers9n Bennett pointed out the homesite of the old Secessionist and told how he met an untimely end. When the Civil War was over, the report runs, "Tuck" Richmond and others returned, went up to Jeff Bennett's house and avenged the death of Samuel Richmond, Tuck's father. This they did by killing Jeff Bennett and his dog. An old grave mound was pointed out as the tomb of secessionist Jeff Bennett there in the ancestral burial ground of the generations of Bennetts. Only a dornick marks the grave. Bennett, Robert Jefferson (I41267)

860 Ada (Tate) Church Phillips, of Asheville, N.C., daughter of the late Marion Leroy Church and Ollie Venie Tester Church, was a lady of the mountains, born and raised in WNC High Country.

She loved nature and we can imagine her soul fluttering around the WNC country side like a butterfly. Tate was born on the Cone Estate in Blowing Rock Township, Watauga County, NC on April 26, 1921, where her father was employed at the Cone Estate. She died of old age at the Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community in Asheville, N.C., on August 9, 2021.

When her father changed jobs, the family, now with five girls, moved to Shulls Mills where her father worked for the ET&WNC narrow gauge railroad that ran between Johnson City, TN, and Boone, N.C. When her mother died 2 months after the birth of their son, Robert on March 14, 1926, the father took Tate, now aged 5, and other four girls to the Grandfather Home for Children Orphanage in Banner Elk, N.C. Robert was adopted by Aner Rominger, a cousin of Tates mother.

Tate had a wonderful life at the orphanage where she was able to swim in Wildcat Lake, ride a horse in the pasture, help with farm chores, wander through the woods, climb trees, play games with the other children, and do all the things that children in a rural area did. When she went to public school, it was in Cranberry, N.C., 6 miles away by bus. Whenever she stayed late at school, she hoofed it back up the mountain to the orphanage.

After graduation she moved from the orphanage onto the campus of Lees McRae College in Banner Elk where she worked her way through school by waiting on tables and cleaning rooms. After graduation from Lees McRae College, she was employed by Hanes Hosiery in Winston-Salem, N.C. During World War II, she volunteered for Nurses training and interned at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. After the war, she was employed by the Kingsport Press, Kingsport, TN.

In 1946 she married Winston Jerome Jackson, brother of L.B. Jackson, Asheville builder and for whom the Jackson Building in Asheville is named. They lived in Kingsport, TN, where Winston had built a new house for her, and where he was employed by the Eastman Kodak Chemical Corp. After Winstons retirement in 1974, they moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL. It was there that she met neighbors, Ted and Sally Lange, who introduced her to private jets and ships. After Winstons death she roamed the world with the Langes on their yacht, the Sally Ann, where Tate had her own stateroom and head. Tates home in Asheville was in DeerWood on Hendersonville Road.

Tate married a second time to Edward Phillips, an engineer with Illinois Bell. They lived in a house near the top of Town Mountain Road in Asheville. He died in 1997 and afterwards Tate moved into Deerfield in February 2000. It was there she met a fellow Independent Living resident, Dr. Jay Lathrop, and the two shared the beauty of WNC and the wonderful amenities of Deerfield for 20 years until Tate developed problems that caused her to move from Independent Living to Assisted Living at Deerfield.

Tate was a member of the Carolina Mountain Club and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. An experienced hiker, she hiked the English Lake District 3 times, climbed Sca Fell in England, Mt. LeConte, NC, Mt. Washington, NH, and Mt. Mitchell, NC. She was a dancer, a polka expert, and a Deerfield cheerleader. She enjoyed Pilates and Tai Chi.

Tate was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, sisters, Dora Sanders, Dorothy Church, Edna Pierson and brother Robert Rominger. She is survived by her sister Josephine Handley of Athens GA and by her cousin, Carolyn Davis of Banner Elk, NC. She is also survived by 3 nieces, Linda Tomlinson, Athens, GA, Dorothy Hauck, St. Augustine, FL and Norma Buffone, Jacksonville, FL, and by 7 nephews.

Mrs. Ada Phillips did not wish for any observance of her life and death.

WILLIAM M. TRIVETTE was born on Sunday, 26 Sep 1824 in northern Iredell Co., North Carolina. James Monroe was President of these United States at that time. Abraham Lincoln was a 15 year old boy living in southern Indiana and Robert E. Lee was a 17 year old boy who was about to receive an appointment to the West Point Military Academy.

William was the first of 10 know children born to Lazarus Trivette and Sarah "Sally" Cranfield who had been married on 04 Nov 1823.

In the 1850 Census taken on 3 Aug 1850, William, age 26, lists his occupation as “Wagon Maker.” He is still living with his parents. It was the norm in this era to live with your parents until you were married. On that date 8 of his 9 siblings were still in their parent’s household. In that census, their name was recorded as “Truit.”

On 01 Dec 1853, Justice of the Peace Thomas Holcomb married William, age 29, and Mary Amanda "Mandy" Cash, age 19, in Iredell Co., North Carolina.

William set to farming, and Amanda took care of the ever increasing number of offspring’s.

On 17 Jul 1860 Mr. A. S. Fraley arrived at William and Amanda’s farm to enumerate them for the 1860 Census. They are listed as living in the “District North of Hunting Creek” in Iredell Co., with “Eagle Mills” being their post office. William occupation is recorded as “Farmer” owning “$200” worth of real estate and having “$200” personal property. Amanda had already borne 4 children, and living with them is a 20 year old, “Emily Marler.”

The 1870 Census William Trivette had moved to “Union Grove Township, Iredell Co., North Carolina,” and now the Trivette family have 7 living children at home.

When the 1880 Census was taken on, 17 Jun of that year, William and his family were still living in “Union Grove Township, Iredell Co., North Carolina,” with 10 children living at home. Of course, William’s occupation is still listed as “Farmer.” His son Levi is listed at a “Carpenter,” while sons Jonathan, Rezin and Lazarus as show as “Works on the farm.” Some of William’s neighbors include, Jesse Tutterrow, age 64; the widow Catherine Hollis, age 45; William Hollis, age 28, the widow Elizabeth Tharpe, age 64; Jeremiah Myers, age 64; Jesse Campbell, age 56; the widow Sarah Gregory, age 31, and the widow Frances Campbell, age 26.

The 1900 Census, the last in which William and Amanda would appear, was taken at their farm on 4 Jun of that year. Four of their children were still living at home and a “Catherine Jefferson,” whose occupation is “Servant” is living with the family. The family still lives in “Union Grove Township, Iredell Co., North Carolina.” William’s occupation is still listed as “Farmer,” while both his son’s Lazarus and Nathan’s occupation is listed as “Teacher in school.” The occupation for William’s sons, William Jr and Pinkney is listed as “Farmer.”

After 49 years of marriage, William’s wife, Mary Amanda "Mandy" Cash Trivette, passed away on 06 Jan 1903 in Union Grove Township, Iredell Co., North Carolina and was laid to rest in the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Union Grove, Iredell Co., North Carolina.

Then at the age of 84 years and 4 days, William M. Trivette passed away on 30 Sep 1908 in Union Grove Township, Iredell Co., North Carolina. In a time long before Death Certificate, there is no way to determine his cause of death. He was laid to rest next to his wife in the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Union Grove, Iredell Co., North Carolina.

Once her children were grown, she was employed by Greene Valley Developmental Center in Greeneville, TN. After working there a few years, Pat and Everett moved to Afton and built a home.

894 Albert Glenn Arnold was born at home and grew up in Mountain City, TN. The oldest of four children born to Herman and Edna Howard Arnold: Albert, Ramon, William (Willie), and is survived by his baby sister Louise Arnold Phillips. Albert married Sarah Elizabeth Batson, and they had three children together, Steven Albert Arnold, Virginia Dawn Oswald, and Tishia Elizabeth Arnold Snyder. Their respective spouses are Pam Blankenship Arnold, Dean William Oswald, and Mitchell J. Snyder. Tishia and Mitch had the proud honor of our parents’ care for the last few years and are much appreciated.

Albert is survived by nieces and nephews as well. Raymond and Joan had Raina and Stephanie. Willie and Millie Arnold had Jeffrey and Westley Arnold, Dale and Louise Phillips had 3 boys Eddy, & Kevin Phillips. Albert and their youngest son Travis were very close. Travis preceded him and will be waiting on the other side. All the Arnold men joined different branches of service and volunteered. Albert was proud to volunteer and serve his country in the Army and will have a military funeral. In his youth he worked hard on farms. He also played Country Western Music which stemmed from his deep roots in gospel music at church. He and his sister Louise sang on the radio a time or two, and Albert traveled singing with such names as Dottie West. He was good with cars and did a little mechanical work in his youth. He was an Electrician by trade and helped many people.
Albert and his wife Sarah lived the majority of their lives in the old home stead on Arnold Road. He enjoyed sitting on the porch and watching the animals. He enjoyed watering his tomatoes. He enjoyed playing pool and singing for his friends. He enjoyed Westerns, Football, and Racing. He enjoyed looking at his wife across the room and reminding her how pretty he still thought she was after 50+ years of marriage. He will be remembered as a loving father and husband, a good friend if you needed him, and a man of few words. He didn’t say much, wouldn’t talk badly about people. When he did talk, people listened because it was worth hearing. He let people live their own lives and he didn’t judge, but if you asked, he had sound advice and knowledgeable help. He could quote scripture for the occasion if you asked for it, but he never shoved his personal beliefs down other people’s throats unless he felt he had no choice.

He will be missed here on Earth, but When the Role is Called Up Yonder, we will all be there. We rejoice that he is in his new body and no longer in any pain.

Albert will lie in state at Mountain City Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2023. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Dunn Memorial Park Cemetery (Forge Creek Rd) in Mountain City, TN with Pastor David Hankal officiating.
