7867 Samuel Perry (he changed his middle name to Powhatan) CARTER was born in Elizabethton, Carter County, Tennessee on 6 August 1819. Carter County was named after his grandfather, Landon CARTER, and Elizabethton was named after his grandmother, Elizabeth McLin CARTER. The CARTERs were probably the richest family in the Northeastern corner of Tennessee during the early 1800's. They had accumulated large land holdings, and operated several iron forges. Samuel was well educated, having attended Duffield Academy, Washington College in Limestone, TN, Princeton University, and graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. He served aboard the U.S.S. Ohio, and saw combat action in the war with Mexico in 1846. Following the war, he returned to Annapolis where he was an instructor. Between 1855 and 1857, he was again at sea and saw action on the China coast. In 1857, he returned to the Naval Academy as an instructor of seamanship. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Samuel was assigned to the War Department, and given the task of returning to Northeastern Tennessee and organizing forces among the mostly Union sympathetic population. He led forces which captured Cumberland Gap in 1862, destroyed 100 miles of railroad tracks, and in 1863, commanded the Kentucky Division which defeated Morgan one day and Smith the next. Recognized for his combat leadership, he advanced in rank throughout the war and was a Major General by war's end. After the war, he returned tothe Naval Academy where he was the Commandant between 1869-1872. In 1882, he was promoted to Rear Admiral, making him the only U.S. military officer to have held the rank of Army General and Navy Admiral. Samuel died on 26 May 1891, and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington, D.C. Samuel's father, Alfred Moore Carter, and grandfather, Landon Carter, also have interesting stories. But instead, let me jump to his great grandfather, John Carter. John was a very wealthy merchantand fur trader. He left Virginia in about 1770 and set up an indian trading post near present day Rogersville, Tennessee. He may have stayed in that location, but the Shawnees robbed and destroyed the post. He moved to the Watauga Settlement near Sycamore Shoals on the Watauga River in what is now Carter County. He was a signer of the Watauga Association in 1772, which provided for self rule four years before the thirteen colonies declared their independence from Great Britain. He held several important postions in Watauga, and was later chairman of the courts in Washington District and Washington County, North Carolina (all of eastern Tennessee). In about 1780, he and his son Landon built a mansion using hand hewn timbers, and installed what is believed to be the first glass windows in the region. John died shortly after the mansion was completed, and may have been the wealthiest man in North Carolina. His descendants were instrumental in the formationof Tennessee in 1796, and two of his great great grandsons became govenors of the State.

7869 Samuel Willcockson was a son of John and Sarah (Boone) Willcockson. His mother was the oldest sister of the famed Kentucky pioneer, Daniel Boone. Samuel married Anna Jordan (1756-1840). He lived in the area of Rowan Co., NC until 1775, when he travelled to KY (in the same year that his Uncle Daniel Boone led the expedition to pave the Wilderness Road). In KY, Samuel established a claim to 1,000 acres on Licking Creek, but within a short time he returned to NC. By the 1790s, Samuel had moved his family to present Ashe Co., NC, where he would live until about 1815, when he once again went to KY. This time, Samuel settled in what was Estill County and is now part of Lee Co., KY. After his death, his widow and several of his children moved further west to Fulton Co., IL. It should be noted that there is a discrepancy regarding the date of death of Samuel Willcockson. His gravestone shows his date of death as "NVR 1825". The family bible of his grandson, Isaac Aaron Willcoxson, gives his death date as 16 September, 1825. Estill Co., KY records indicate that both of these dates are likely incorrect. Samuel's name is found on the Estill County tax lists until 1827, and the inventory of his estate was recorded in Estill County in March, 1827. Therefore, it is believed that Samuel probably died in early 1827. Wilcoxin, Samuel (I1778)

7892 Science Hill Sports Hall of Fame

Cot Presnell played for Mule Brown on Elizabethton's 1938 state championship team -- they beat Jackson 26-13 in Jackson -- and played for Steve Lacy at Milligan. Like Kermit Tipton, he ended up getting his degree from Ole Miss.

Presnell came to Science Hill when Brown arrived in '48. He was an assistant for parts of four decades.

Presnell also started Science Hill's golf program in 1952. Led by state runner-up John Abernath, his Hilltoppers won a state title in 1959. He was the athletic director for two years between Sid Smallwood and Elvin Little.

Bob Taylor said Presnell was an excellent football scout. He said he intercepted a pitch and took it for a TD against Elizabethton in 1953 after Presnell predicted he would earlier in the week if he read the key correctly on a certain play-call.

"Cot said, 'They've got this play where I think you can intercept the lateral and score,'" Taylor said. "And I did. I took off and the ball was right there. Cot went crazy when I got that ball."

Most remember Presnell as keeping a lot of young lives from going south.

"Cot Presnell sure helped me," Bob May said. "You could tell he cared about you, he and his brother Zeb."

May and Bo Austin were teammates in the early '50s when Presnell was an assistant.

"Cot thought the world of Bob May and (vice-versa)," Bo Austin said. "Cot meant a lot to all of us. And he was a darn good football coach."

Johnson City Press, 10 May 2012

Cot R. Presnell, of 1306 Iris Avenue, Johnson City, passed away on May 8, 2012, at the Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Robert Julius and Lillian (Blair) Presnell. He was a former teacher and coach at Science Hill High School and served as Director of Athletics at Science Hill High School during the 1970s.

Cot was a lover of life, people and sports. He began playing sports at a young age and was the captain and quarterback of the football team at Elizabethton High School when they won the State Football Championship in 1938.

He was also a WWII veteran, having served in both the Army and the Air Force. After his service to his country was completed, he attended Milligan College, where he received his BS degree, and later completed his MA degree at Ole Miss.

Cot often reminisced about his coaching days at Science Hill High School, where he coached the golf team to the state championship in 1959. He is a member of the Science Hill Sports Hall of Fame, the Johnson City Parks and Recreation Wall of Fame and the Elizabethton High School Sports Hall of Fame.

Cot was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church and was a loving and giving Christian who loved everyone and helped as many people as he could. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
