7705 Robert Harvey Smith joined his Lord and Savior on May 14, 2020 while surrounded by family in the home of his daughter, Stacie Smith Crim. Originally from Elizabethton, Tennessee, Bob, also lovingly known as “Bob Bob” to his grandchildren, will be remembered for his steadfast faith in Christ, his love for people, his wit and wisdom, and his service to our country during World War II. To know him was to understand why his was called the Greatest Generation.
After the war, Mr. Smith spent most of his life in Greenwood, Miss., where he moved in 1954 with his bride, Rachel Joan McGee and their infant son, Brent. The two had met in Memphis, Tenn., not long after Bob began working for McKesson Robbins Drug Company. During his forty-five-year tenure, Mr. Smith was a standout salesman. He was only the third person to represent McKesson in the Mississippi Delta since the company established the territory in 1879. Despite his young age, he formed such a strong customer base that he would go on to be named the nation’s number one wholesale salesman twice in his career. His success is a reflection of the profound relationships he cultivated with all. Of course, if you asked Mr. Smith, he gave all the credit to his devoted wife Joan and to “the finest group of customers in the world”. He was beloved not only by his coworkers, but also by the many grateful store owners for whom he would go to the ends of the earth.
After his retirement in 1990, rather than adopting the comfortable life of a retiree, he devoted his energy to First United Methodist Church where he was a member since 1954. He served in many capacities, including as chairman of the administrative board for ten years and as finance chairman for fourteen. He likewise enjoyed helping his son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Laura Smith, at their own pharmacy in Oxford, Miss. Chaney’s Pharmacy benefitted from both Bob’s wisdom and ebullient spirit, as did we all.
Mr. Smith was born in 1925 to William and Opal Smith in Elizabethton, Tenn. He joyfully celebrated his ninety-fifth birthday surrounded by his children on May 2. He was a member of the 1938 Elizabethton High School football team, who went on to win the school’s only state championship and to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. At the young age of eighteen, he departed East Tennessee after being drafted to aid in America’s fight in the Second World War. As part of the 42nd Infantry Division—known as the “Rainbow Division”—of the 232nd Infantry Regiment, Company K, he rose to the rank of technical sergeant. The Rainbow Division landed in Marseille, France in December of 1944 and served six months as part of a task force under General George Patton. Afterward they marched into Germany, where Sergeant Smith earned the Bronze Star for his action in the Battle of Wurzburg. He continued on with the Rainbow Division to liberate Dachau, the first concentration camp established by the Third Reich.
Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-five years, Joan McGee Smith; his son David Barton Smith; his parents; and his sister Geraldine Smith Peters.
He is survived by his son Robert Brent Smith and his wife Laura of Oxford, Miss.; his daughter Stacie Smith Crim and her husband Bill of Jackson, Miss.; his five grandchildren David Barton Smith II and his wife Leslie of Oxford, Miss., Aynslee Alexander Smith of Oxford, Miss., William Lee Crim III and his wife Kelly of Hattiesburg, Miss., Dr. Rachel Barton Crim of Charlottesville, Va., and Robert Balie Crim of Oxford, Miss.; his great-grandson Barton Brent Smith of Oxford, Miss.; his sister Christine Eller Smith of Elizabethton, Tenn.; his brother-in-law Dale Gassaway McGee and his wife Jan of Memphis, Tenn.; his two nieces Teresa Peters Broome and her husband Rick of Elizabethton, Tenn.; and Sharon Peters Purdy of Arlington, Texas; his nephews Lyle Vinson McGee of Monroe, La.; and Michael Wade McGee of Atlanta, Ga.; and several great nieces and nephews.

Howard, Roby Jethro Jr. (I40645)

7734 Roby moved with his family to Johnson City, Washington County, Tennessee at an early age and called it home. He enlisted in the Tennessee Army National Guard in Knoxville, Tennessee on 23 August 1917 and stated his date of birth as 27 September 1897 making him 19 years and 11 months old. In fact, he was only 16 and 11 months of age. Roby knew the National Guard units had been called into Federal Service by the President on 25 July 1917 and he didn't want to be left behind.

Since Roby listed his home address as Johnson City he was assigned to Company G, 3rd Tennessee Infantry Regiment based at Elizabethton and sent back to Johnson City. When he got back Company G as were all the other companies in the 3rd were getting ready to deploy to Camp Sevier, Greenville, South Carolina to form the new 30th Division. The 3rd arrived Camp Sevier on 8 September 1917. There they would join units from North and South Carolina, as well as those from Tennessee to form the core of the 30th Division, later known as the Old Hickory Division in honor of General and President Andrew Jackson.

General Order No. 4 dated 12 September 1917, Headquarters 30th Division brought about a big change for Roby and the 3rd. They were reorganized into the 117th Infantry Regiment under the 59th Infantry Brigade and Roby stayed with Company G, 2nd Battalion. He took to Army life and impressed his leadership during training and was promoted to Private First Class on 19 October 1917.

Roby departed Camp Sevier on 5 May 1918 with Company G for Camp Mills, Long Island, New York to await transportation overseas. He along with others were given leave and for days afterwards and on the ship nursed sore necks from the hours they spent looking at all the tall skyscrapers of New York City. After boarding the SS Northumberland in Brooklyn, New York, they set off for Liverpool, England on 11 May and arrived on 23 May. After disembarking the ship he and the three infantry regiments of the 30th Division boarded troop trains and were taken to the port cities of Dover and Folkestone for the channel crossing over the next couple of days. He and his company arrived the port city of Calais, France on the 25th. As the 30th Division piecemealed into France just as they had done into England, they were taken to Audruicq by train and marched the short distance to the various towns and villages known as the Eperlecques Training Area in France. Roby was billeted with the 117th at Nortbecourt and began Phase "A" Training with the British 39th Division on 10 June 1918. It was during this timeframe, Roby still impressing his leadership with his own leadership abilities became a non-commissioned officer with his promotion to Corporal on 1 June 1918.

Phase "A" was to be completed on 10 July, but was extended to the morning of 16 July. Phase "B" began the same day for the 30th Division with a three day march into Belgium. Upon arriving the Poperinghe Area, the 117th was billeted in one of the numerous camps and were intergraded over the next month into actual battlefield operations and trench warfare conditions with active combat units. Phase "B" was completed on 10 August and Phase "C" the last training phase was cancelled and the 30th were declared combat ready. Operational orders came in on the 14th and the 30th Division was to relieve the British 33rd Division starting the night of 16 August in the Canal Sector near Ypres, Belgium. The Ypres-Lys Offensive began on 19 August 1918 and the 30th would be in the thick of the fighting to the very end of the war.

Roby and the 30th were given a breathing spell after being relieved from the Ypres-Lys Offensive on 5 September and were entrained to the St.Pol area and companies F, G & H of the 117th were billeted at Pierremont, France to resupply, do some more training and get a little rest from all the heavy artillery explosions. On the 17th the 30th Division made the move to the Puchevillers Area were they would come under the control of the 4th British Army on the 21st as would the American 27th "New York" Division to join in the Somme Offensive, also known as the One Hundred Day Offensive.

Roby was killed in action on 8 October 1918, the first assault day of the Battle of Montbrehain while engaging German Forces at Premont. He participated in two Unit Campaigns: Ypres-Lys Offensive in Belgium and the Somme Offensive in France. Roby also fought in the Battle of Bellicourt on the Hindenburg Line. He had just turned 18 years old 11 days prior and was first interred at the British Military Cemetery at Fricourt, France and later moved to the Somme American Cemetery in Bony, France and placed in Block A, Row 29, Grave 25. After his parents decided that Roby should come home, they requested he be returned to Johnson City and was interred at the Mountain Home National Cemetery, Section I, Row 15, Site 10 on 10 July 1925.

He was 74 years old, but always young at heart. Roger was proud of his humble upbringing in the Cedar Grove community near Milligan College in Carter County, Tenn. Born on September 9, 1948, to the late Reverend Clarence and Selma Snodgrass, Roger was a proud Happy Valley Warrior where he excelled on the baseball diamond. His love for the game continued throughout his life where he went on to inspire countless lives as a Little League and Babe Ruth Coach. Professionally, he worked for Eastman Chemical Corporation for 33 years, retiring in 2001. He also owned and operated Riverbend Used Cars until 2011. He met the love of his life, Bonni, in 1967 at a bonfire at Happy Valley High School. Bonni and her family had just moved to the area from Ohio and the two were inseparable, marrying in 1968. The two enjoyed 54 years of traveling, watching sports, and spending time with their family. The couple have three children, Cathi, Jon (Jennifer) and Roger II (Linda). They are also the proud grandparents of Lauren, Lainey, William and Morgan. An avid lover of all sports, Roger’s greatest passion was baseball. As a youth, both his Pony League and Colt League teams advanced to the Southeast Regional tournaments. He threw a no-hitter in a 1-0 loss during the Colt League Southeast Tournament in Norfolk, Va., when he was 15. A 1966 graduate of Happy Valley High School, he utilized a nasty knuckleball to help pitch three no-hitters and two perfect games during his career. His greatest impact, though, came when he began coaching. During his Little League tenure, his orange-and-white Norwell team was dominant during the 1980s, winning nine straight league championships. While coaching Little League, he also coached Elks, a Babe Ruth squad for 14-15-year-olds, for five years. Those teams won four league champions during his tenure. His teams won nearly 150 games during that period with just 14 losses. He always loved his players. He could vividly recall each one of them and games with amazing clarity. Along with assistants Brad Johnson, Kenny Gouge and Richard Whitson and others, the coaches were more concerned about teaching the players about life rather than winning and losing. Roger also worked hard to give back to his beloved Happy Valley. He served as President of the school’s Sports Club in the 1980s-1990s. He, Dude Dykes, Richard Sutphin, and others brought about major improvements to the football facilities that were second to none. He spearheaded a fundraiser to install a state-of-the art playing surface on the football field that was one of the best in the area. He also raised money to build two new sets of bleachers on the home side as well as a new concession stand and addition to the football fieldhouse. In addition to his parents, he has rejoined his precious sister, Bonnie Cody, and brothers, Gene and Reverend C.W. Snodgrass. He was also beloved by his wife’s family and is reunited with his father-in-law, John Leonard, and brother-in-law, Dave Forinash. A celebration of life will be held at Zion Baptist Church (1982 Gap Creek Road) in Elizabethton, Tenn., on Sunday, January 22. The receiving of friends will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, with a service by Pastor Dr. Alan King following. All former players and friends are encouraged to come and share stories.
